Bream Gives Me Hiccups
Bream Gives Me Hiccups | Jesse Eisenberg
This isnt a James Franco situation where hes trying to pass off his snapchats as performance art. Eisenberg is truly a talented writer. . . Hilarious and poignant.Entertainment Weekly Bream Gives Me Hiccups: And Other Stories is the whip-smart fiction debut of Academy Award-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg. Known for his iconic film roles but also for his regular pieces in the New Yorker and his two critically acclaimed plays, Eisenberg is an emerging voice in fiction. Taking its title from a group of stories that begin the book, Bream Gives Me Hiccups moves from contemporary L.A. to the dormrooms of an American college to ancient Pompeii, throwing the reader into a universe of social misfits, reimagined scenes from history, and ridiculous overreactions. In one piece, a tense email exchange between a young man and his girlfriend is taken over by the mans sister, who is obsessed with the Bosnian genocide (The situation reminds me of a little historical blip called the Karadordevo agreement); in another, a college freshman forced to live with a roommate is stunned when one of her ramen packets goes missing (she didnt have one of my ramens. She had a chicken ramen); in another piece, Alexander Graham Bell has teething problems with his invention (Ive been calling Mabel all day, she doesnt pick up! Yes, of course I dialed the right number 2!). United by Eisenbergs gift for humor and character, and grouped into chapters that each open with an illustration by award-winning cartoonist Jean Jullien, the witty pieces collected in Bream Gives Me Hiccups explore the various insanities of the modern world, and mark the arrival of a fantastically funny, self-ironic, and original voice.

Mehso-so

This one is somewhere between So-So and a Pick for me. As an actor, Jessie Eisenberg annoys me, but I've read some of his humor essays in McSweeney's collections, and they're brilliant. In this collection, I particularly enjoyed "An Email Exchange with my First Girlfriend, Which at a Certain Point is Taken Over by my Older Sister, a College Student Studying the Bosnian Genocide." I also enjoyed "My Nephew Has Some Questions."

Another one checked off the list! Letter B #litsyatoz
I had no idea what this book was about when I picked it up. One of the funniest books I've read! Very readable with short stories that are sure to have you laughing by page 3. Also a great selection of stories that would be an excellent choice for studying voice in literature. More of this please?!?!

Wait: Jesse Eisenberg writes? And Sherman Alexie praises it?? Ok, used bookstore in Tokyo, you have made an unexpected sell. #mommyreads #usedbook #impulsebuy #actorswhoauthor

TobeyTheScavengerMonk This has been on my radar for awhile. Interested to hear what you think. 8y
alanacristin @TobeyTheScavengerMonk the first section is subtitled "restaurant reviews from a privileged nine year old" and I'm loving it ? 8y

Pickpick

This was a perfect quick, silly book to break up a streak of heavy, serious reading. Several of the bits were funny enough to read aloud to my husband, while one long story was so tedious I had skip ahead. The restaurant reviews by a privileged 9 yr old were spot on, as the bit about separation anxiety camp. Eisenberg writes convincingly from various narrative perspectives, definitely a child who is a product of our times.

Spiderfelt Also, I could hear every Character Eisenberg has played in his various movie roles incorporated into these stories. If you appreciate him as an actor, you will likely enjoy the book. If he annoys you, skip it. 8y
BookishFeminist yes! I loved his book. I feel like Jesse Eisenberg just gets me. 8y

Pleasantly surprised by this book. James Franco rather put me off actors-as-writers, but so far Eisenberg is actually a pretty funny writer without being, y'know, Actors Anonymous levels of awful/akin to putting pins under my nails. Nice one Eisenberg! 📖👍🏼

BookishFeminist I adored this book. :) it got mixed reviews but I feel like Jesse Eisenberg gets me. It's super witty! Kind of reminded me of BJ Novak's One More Thing which I also loved. 8y
Spiderfelt I also loved BJ Novak's book. If you liked it @BookishFeminist , and it reminded you of Novak, then I have two good reasons to check it out. 8y
BookishFeminist @Spiderfelt ❤️ I hope you do check it out. Let me know what you think of it! I think it was very underrated last year, but if approached as something meant to be witty & emotional, it's great. 8y
Spiderfelt Read the first story on my break @BookishFeminist. Eisenberg clearly remembers what it is like to be a kid, and gets the subtleties of human emotion. 8y
BookishFeminist @Spiderfelt He does! I want to give him a hug. 8y
