Congrats on the Litsyversary @BarbaraBB It's been a treat getting to know you over the years! Although Johnson's brilliant racial satire starts out in America, most of it takes place in Antarctica. It's inspired by Poe's only novel. I had to look at the beginning of my GR tracking, pre-Litsy, to find a book I love but haven't discussed very often. #thinklocalgiveaway

BarbaraBB This is funny: when I clicked on the blurb, it‘s in Dutch! It does sound good and I‘ve never heard of it. Thank for playing and for being here! 💕 4y

The only one of these that is TBR is Spark's. I'm planning on reading it right after I read Defoe's book (might plan also reading Coetzee's "Foe"). I read Ballard's fever dream of a book (I have yet to read a Ballard that wasn't a fever dream) around 20 years ago. I've been thinking about it a lot recently, so I think I'm due for a reread. Speaking of fever dreams, Casares' book is an enigmatic, & memorable experience. One of the stranger ?

vivastory novellas that I've read. Pym, based on Poe's sole novel, is an absurdist satirical novel about race. Imagine if Poe & Beatty had collaborated on "The Sellout" & you have "Pym." #LaIslaBonita #MOvember @Cinfhen 4y
DrexEdit Such interesting books! Pym is already on my TBR so, stacking! 😊 4y

Aimeesue I picked up the Spark at the Book Sorti g a month or so ago. I should really get to it. I do love a Spark novel. 4y
vivastory @Aimeesue I've only read "Memento Mori" so far, but I loved it. 4y
Aimeesue @vivastory Mémento Mori is my favorite Spark. The phone calls just kill me. ? 4y

Y‘all. This book is hilarious. #MatJohnson‘s exploration of #EdgarAllanPoe is clever, & really made me think about things I overlooked in early American lit. #Pym #WinterBreakReading

Mehso-so

Really at a loss for how to describe this one- I think it is an allegory about race including an all-black crew following the trek of Pym to the south pole where they encounter a race of "snow-monkeys" who enslave them, they escape to a bio-dome of a painter (clearly Thomas Kinkaid) and ultimately land on an island of africans. Whew. Colson Whitehead blurbed it as a cunning satire so I'll go with that!

What did I just listen to? And how is a book do banana pants crazy so good? I had heard about this book from @bookriot and I'm so glad I did. This was fun but also crazy. Seriously crazy. JD Jackson is the narrator and does a wonderful job. I've been on a streak of good books and narrators, I'm bound for a complete dud. It wasn't this one though! If the synopsis sounds interesting to you, pick it up ASAP. I have feelings.

This was such a wild ride! It's a racial satire that is as cleverly done as it is hilarious. For those who tried The Sellout and were put off by the language and the narrative structure, this might be a good alternative. It's a very good companion for it, regardless. An absurd plot that will make you think. And laugh. A lot.

This was recommended by Jen Northington on one of book riot's recent podcasts. I second her recommendation. If you've read "The Sellout" & are looking for more racial satires, look no further.

I'd been looking for this one, too. Surprised at the volume. Thought it was thicker.

vivastory @Donna_sBookMinute if you enjoy this I recommend Mat Ruff's "Lovecraft Country" 7y

Mat Johnson is one of the best satirists out there. Somehow, he managed to cover academia, slavery, technology, love, the end of days, and race in under 350 pages. And I can't stop laughing at the phrase "snow honkies". Stayed up way past bedtime to finish this one.

This book is hilarious and scholarly at the same time. Perfect for Poe-loving nerds, like me.

ReadThisBookYall Mat Johnson's Twitter is absolutely hilarious. I'll definitely pick this up! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute References to my home town caught me completely off guard. I'll have to see if this author does Gary, Indiana justice. I lived within walking distance of Miller Beach as a 20-something -- and down the street from The Jacksons as a child. I'm so glad you posted this specific page. 🏖📀⛱🎙 8y
