Wild Nights is JC Oates' collection of stories on the final days of five American authors (Poe, Dickinson, Samuel Clemens, Henry James & Hemingway). Oates frequently explores the disparity between the public perception & the real life of the author (esp in the case of Clemens & Hemingway where they are performing the parts of Twain & Papa in public). I‘m not sure how I feel about this book. It was super dark. I think I need to read the second one now to really know what to think. The characters are really interesting. Each of them has something different to break your heart and the book itself is just very bleak. I did not expect it to end the way it did which is probably why I am conflicted on how I feel about it as a whole.
