They Came Like Swallows
They Came Like Swallows | William Maxwell
6 posts | 9 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
Elizabeth Morison is an ordinary woman. Yet to eight-year-old Bunny, his mother is the centre of his universe. To his older brother, Robert, she is someone he must protect against the dangers of the outside world. And to James Morison, his wife is the foundation on which his family rests and life without her is unimaginable. William Maxwell's unique and moving family portrait confirms his reputation as one of the twentieth century's finest novelists.

Maxwell does not disappoint. His prose is so seemingly simple and yet transports me to wherever he wants me to go. I fell in love with 8 year old Bunny from the beginning and didn‘t want it to end.

Just started the tagged book. I love Maxwell‘s prose! Also reading Pickwick Papers (❤️ Dickens‘ wicked sense of humor) Romeo and Juliet (❤️ the banter and word play) The Church Cracked Open (lots to think about in this one) and volume 3 of Kristin Lavransdatter (vivid depictions of medieval Norway.)
Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView Want to play @Lynnsoprano @TheBookHippie ?

Lovely, lyrical family story in the time of Armistice and the Spanish Flu. Maxwell had a delicate touch with words and characters. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

This is the second novel by William Maxwell I've read, the first being "So Long, See You Tomorrow" (1980). “They Came Like Swallows" (1937) is set in a Midwestern town during the 1918 flu epidemic.

#7days7covers Day 3 #CoverCrush

@DarcysMom Care to join in if you haven‘t already? Just post 7 covers you love over 7 days, no explanation needed.

I just finished the tagged book last week, very much enjoyed it. A silent, beautiful book. I find the sky on the cover very appealing.

DarcysMom Fun! Thanks for the invite! ❤ 5y
