The Verso Book of Dissent
The Verso Book of Dissent: From Spartacus to the Shoe-Thrower of Baghdad | Andrew Hsiao, Audrea Lim
6 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
Throughout the ages and across every continent, people have struggled against those in power and raised their voices in protestrallying others around them and inspiring uprisings in eras yet to come. Their echoes reverberate from Ancient Greece, China and Egypt, via the dissident poets and philosophers of Islam and Judaism, through to the Arab slave revolts and anti-Ottoman rebellions of the Middle Ages. These sources were tapped during the Dutch and English revolutions at the outset of the Modern world, and in turn flowed into the French, Haitian, American, Russian and Chinese revolutions. More recently, resistance to war and economic oppression has flared up on battlefields and in public spaces from Beijing and Baghdad to Caracas and Los Angeles. This anthology, global in scope, presents voices of dissent from every era of human history: speeches and pamphlets, poems and songs, plays and manifestos. Every age has its iconoclasts, and yet the greatest among them build on the words and actions of their forerunners. The Verso Book of Dissent will become an invaluable resource, reminding todays citizens that these traditions will never die. From the Trade Paperback edition.

In the spirit of wanting to do better in the new year, my plan is to catalog all these books that I‘ve acquired in 2020, as well as read the ones I haven‘t had a chance to! Bc of covid, I‘ve subscribed to three publishers I love this year, and I‘m definitely stacking the to-read pile 😅📚

Thanks to PM Press, Verso, and Haymarket Books for keeping me inspired with these covers and titles. Can‘t wait to actually go thru these works!

CaliforniaCay Nice! Welcome to litsy 🤗 4y
Nalbuque @CaliforniaCay thank you so much! I love it here!! 4y
tenar Welcome to Litsy! I have a virtual stack of Verso books I hope to tackle this year, good luck to both of us! 4y
Nalbuque @tenar thank you, I‘m very excited to start the year here 🖤 Lmk if you find a particular fave in your verso stack! I‘m almost done with “Revolting Prostitutes” and it‘s fantastic! 4y
Nute Welcome to Litsy! It‘s a warm and friendly community. I know that you will enjoy yourself here. I‘m looking forward to getting to know you!🙂 I love the idea behind this post! How are things coming along so far this year? 3y

When you go to NY with a strict rule of: only buy books from indie pressed based in NY and forget that the friend you‘re visiting is also a book lover and will take you to these beautiful indie book stores. Ooooops

Psst! Mother's Day is May 14th!!! We know your mom contains multitudes, so we've got gifts for her every side. For example: gift for your mother, the revolutionary!

I read the 2016 version. Spanning centuries, this is a global compilation of quotes from radical thinkers and activists. Each includes a short bio. No depth, this is more of a bathroom reader reference tome, but overall an enjoyable read. #readvolution #revolution

Shout out to @ReadingEnvy for the heads up on the amazing deal (90%off ebooks) at versobooks.com . I grabbed some great progressive, non-fiction books on things I am very interested in. I was already planning to read more nonfiction next year. This was a great incentive!

Thank you whoever posted the Verso ebook sale... I wanted their Book of Dissent for Christmas but my family only buys me cookbooks!! Hmm that sends a message. Anyway these five books were five dollars total and all of them fit into yet-to-be-revealed reading goals for 2017. Pretty exciting!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That's a great sale 8y
Christine Great picks!! But same here re cookbooks- I do love them, and yet... 8y
HardcoverHearts I jumped on it! Thank you so much. I was already thinking I need to read more non-fiction next year, so it was perfect. 8y
