Me and Marvin Gardens
Me and Marvin Gardens | Amy Sarig King
Obe Devlin spends a lot of his time cleaning up the creek that runs through what little is left of his family's once extensive farmland, and worrying about what the developers are doing to nearby, and the pollution it is causing--but one day he finds a strange creature by his creek that eats plastic, and soon the animal he calls Marvin Gardens becomes his personal secret, which he believes needs to be protected from pretty much everybody.

One word - PLASTICS! This was a cute story about conservation and environmentalism but the side stories made everything kind of muddy. Obe's family has lived on land that's been sold off over the years and he finds an animal who eats plastic living in the creek. There's drama with a kid who used to be his friend and a girl who is now his best friend and Obe keeps telling the story of his great grandfather in asides. Fun but not spectacular.

Middle grade A.S. King! Some things I liked: environmentalism, fantasy creature, friendships and family relationships. I especially liked that the parents were flawed and yet loving in their own ways. And how the main character, Obe, was so introspective!

Zelma You had me at middle-grade A.S. King! 💕 7y

... I figured a book title like "Me and Marvin Gardens" should be pictured with "me" and "Marvin Gardens." This middle grade was charming (albeit a little didactic), but I was the only one in my book club who thought so.

Little bit of trivia about Me and Marvin Gardens: the author also writes under the name A S King. Her YA novels include Ask The Passengers and Please Ignore Vera Dietz. This middle grade novel is every bit as good as her YA books I've read.

I loved this book. So much going on. All important topics and realistic for what middle school students go through.

This #middlegrade novel is about Obe, a 5th grader who is wiser than his years. He spends his free time picking up garbage along his family's creek bed. One day he discovers a new species of animal that eats plastic. This is the good news. However the scat produced by this new animal is toxic. Bullying is also a part of this story that gives the reader much to reflect on about how we treat our world and those in it.

Friends & Family: When does hockey season end?
Me: NEVER!
But it does give me some reading time while I wait for the practice, game, tryout...to start. 😉
