Fans of Judy Moody and Clarice Bean will love Juana, the spunky young Colombian girl who stars in this playful, abundantly illustrated new series. Juana loves many things drawing, eating Brussels sprouts, living in Bogot, Colombia, and especially her dog, Lucas, the best amigo ever. She does not love wearing her itchy school uniform, solving math problems, or going to dance class. And she especially does not love learning the English. Why is it so important to learn a language that makes so little sense? But when Juanas abuelos tell her about a special trip they are planningone that Juana will need to speak English to go onJuana begins to wonder whether learning the English might be a good use of her time after all. Hilarious, energetic, and utterly relatable, Juana will win over los corazones the hearts of readers everywhere in her first adventure, presented by namesake Juana Medina.

Review: Juana and Lucas by Juana Medina, 2016, is a realistic fiction book about a young Colombian girl struggling to find the motivation to learn English.
Blurb: I would use this book with ESL students or students who English isn't their first language, they would be able to relate and reflect on their own struggles with learning a new language. The illustrations and word placement are great too!

I read the whole book and I can honestly say the colorful illustrations are the best! I also love how at the end she didnt think it was a bad idea to learn english anymore because it helped her learn her passion for traveling and being able to make a lot of new friends with speaking two different languages!

Juana and Lucas by Juana Medina, published in 2016 was an adorable short chapter book to read. This book is about a young girl and her everyday life of learning to speak English because she is not from the US. Alongside her is her dog (best friend) Lucas. And Lucas always knows how to cheer her up. This book also honestly portrays the life for todays children. Juana had such a rough first day of school because of different incidents, relatable!

I liked this whole page a lot because it‘s explaining her town of bogota, and later in the book there‘s more pages like this but explaining things like why her best friend is awesome. I like that it‘s normalizing different cultures

I would use this book when learning about different cultures or if the children learn spanish. it does a great job of using spanish during english sentences but with words that sound similar to english

#ucflae3414f17 this RF by Juana Medina is a great story about a young girl living in Bogatá, Colombia. She loves many things, but she is not a very big fan of school—especially learning English. However, she soon finds out that she is going on a trip where she will have to understand the language. This Pura Belpre award winner is a great addition to 2nd and 3rd grade classroom libraries. The teaching strategy I chose to use is Partner Reading.

Radams I think that students would have fun reading and learning about Juana and relating to her experiences together. I would use UDL 8.3 ‘foster collaboration and community‘ by having students read and work together. I would use EL 2 ‘promote cooperation‘ and EL 6 ‘continually monitor students‘ compression‘. Teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=51267&a=1#ActivityGuides has great lesson ideas to go along with partner reading. 6y

Juana and Lucas tells the story of a Baby panthers on the prowl. 👀 girl living in Bogota Colombia. Winner of the 2017 Pura Belpre award, this book gives us insight on Juana‘s struggle to learn English. Her family is going on a trip and she is told that in order to go, she will have to be able to speak English, which brings her to the realization that she might need this unlikely skill after all.

AlexaDP I think that this would be great for LCs, and since it a book that is going to be apart of a series, it can be continued, anytime a new book comes out. 6y
AlexaDP I think this book would be great for English learners, and ESOL strategies, 24; incorporating the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum, 25; incorporating second language acquisition strategies in the curriculum, and 29; offering a variety of reference materials at the student's‘ instructional level. 6y
AlexaDP The UDL strategies that can be used are, 4.2; optimize access to tools and assistive technologies, 6.3; facilitate managing information and resources and 6.4; enhance capacity for monitoring progress
for independent use

Juana & Lucas is a realistic fiction book picture that is written and illustrated by Juana Medina. This picture book has won the Pura Belpre Award and the best teaching strategy is RA because it would be easier for students to stay connected to the text. This picture book is about Juana who loves many things, but her favorite things is her dog Lucas. #ucflae3414f17 https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=51267&a=1 (the link provides activities)

hannahl UDL: 3.2 because the relationship between Juana & Lucas is the main idea. ESOL: 14 because books are easier to understand when read at a slower speed. 6y
Beths I never heard of this story thanks for sharing! This seems like a story that children can really relate to. 6y

A fun book about a Colombian girl wondering why she needs to learn English. Her introductions of her community of people, from her aunt who loves music to the grocers, make this book special. #CampReadALot #WeNeedDiverseBooks
