A Wrinkle in Time | Madeleine L'Engle

Pickpick

A Wrinkle in Time tells the story of Meg Murry, a young girl whose life is turned upside down, when she, her brother and a friend from school get transported through space and time to a place they could never dream of. They are here for a reason, and that reason is; to find Meg‘s father and bring him back home. This SF novel is great for LC and takes you on an adventure to a place you could only dream of.

Martina does not know anything about being in love or marriage, and to help, some members of her Cuban family give her gifts to make her more attractive; however her abuela gives her a gift that is the most useful; a bit of very interesting advice. I think this TL story would be great for RT, because some of the best books for reader‘s theater are folktales.

AlexaDP 3 ESOL strategies that can be used to teach this book are, 14; simplifying your speech by making it slower and redundant 15; reinforcing the key ideas you present again and again, and 16; integrating speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. 6y
AlexaDP 3 UDL strategies that a teacher can use to teach this book are, 2.1; clarifying vocabulary and symbols, 4.1; varying the methods for response and navigation, and 7.2; optimizing relevance, value, and authenticity. 6y

Where the Sidewalk Ends is a book of poems that tell a story about a magical, mystical world where nothing is quite normal, but everything is great. This world is beyond the sidewalk and it gives the reader insight on the difference in where the sidewalk ends versus where the sidewalk is.

AlexaDP This is a great book for SR! Having students pick a poem out of the book and share it with the class along with a brief description of what they think the poem is about would be a great way to see the different perspectives of each student. 6y
AlexaDP The ESOL strategies that I think would work well with teaching this book are, 38; assigning short readings for homework, 43; having students underline or highlight key words or important facts in written assignments, and 50, for content comprehension use a variety of comprehension activities, such as; strip stories, KWL activities, SQ3R, learning logs, role playing activities, cloze strategy, etc. 6y

The Giving Tree | Shel Silverstein

Pickpick

This book is about a female apple tree and a young boy who develop a relationship with one another. As a child the young boy spends all the time he can with the tree, but as he grows older he spends less time with her, only coming to see her when he wanted something, but because the tree wanted the boy to be happy, she gave him whatever he asked for.

AlexaDP As the tree gives all that she can to keep the boy happy, she begins to give pieces of herself that she cannot get back, such as her trunk, her branches and her apples. Soon the tree becomes unhappy, but in a final act of giving she finds peace. I think this book is great for AS, this is one of Shel Silverstein‘s classics, and it is one book by him that everybody has read before. 6y
AlexaDP The ESOL strategies that I think work best with this book are, 1; teaching questioning for clarification, 8; using direct instruction: Modeling, explaining, scaffolding, name the strategy and show how to use it and 17; providing contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions. 6y
AlexaDP The UDL strategies that work for this book are, 7.1; optimizing individual choice and autonomy, 7.2; optimizing relevance, value, and authenticity, and 4.1; varying the methods for response and navigation. 6y

When Chinese workers are brought onto the plantation that Sugar works on, she see this as an opportunity to learn more about the world. While, some people on the plantation feel threatened, Sugar is intrigued, and even decides that she is going to be the one to close the cultural gap between the two groups of individuals.

AlexaDP I think this book would be great for GR in the classroom, giving students an opportunity to learn about how people lived in a time before ours, and show how differently things were back then. 6y
AlexaDP The ESOL strategies that I think would work best with this book are, 36; asking numerous questions which require higher level thinking responses, 37; using language experience techniques in discussing concepts and ideas, and 38; assigning short readings for homework. 6y
AlexaDP The UDL strategies I think suit this book the best are, 2.;1 clarifying vocabulary and symbols, 3.1; activating or supplying background knowledge, 3.2.; highlighting patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. 6y

Finding Winnie is the story of the world‘s most famous bear. In 1914, a woman tells her young son the true tale of how his great-grandfather rescued and learned to love a bear cub when he was on his way to take care of soldiers‘ horses in World War I, and how this bear became the inspiration for Winnie-the-Pooh.

AlexaDP I think this book is great for Storytelling, because most students have already heard of Winnie-the-Pooh, and will enjoy hearing about how he became the beloved character he is today. 6y
AlexaDP 3 ESOL strategies that I think would go great for teaching this book to students are, 44; focusing on thinking skills; predict, categorize, classify, observe and report (oral-written-pictorial), sequence, summarize, 45; using Venn diagrams to contrast and compare activities, and 46; using discovery learning activities (hands-on-activities). 6y

He is determined to prove that he is worth of helping her, so one day when Strega Nona goes out of town to visit a friend, he takes her magic pasta pot and causes a lot of trouble for the townspeople.

AlexaDP I think this Caldecott winner is a great book for RT because of the magical aspect to the story. Children will love feeding the town with a magical pasta pot of their own. 6y
AlexaDP I think the ESOL strategies that work best with this book are, 12; teaching to two objectives, language and content, 13; using preview/review activities, and 32, using student pairs for team learning, especially for reports, experiments and projects. 6y

Elwyn White loved words. When he was a child, he would chase them through the pages of the dictionary and crafted into poems for the St. Nicholas magazine. As a young man, his words led him to writing jobs at some big city newspapers, like The New Yorker. When his own stories came calling, White turned his words into classics books, like Charlotte‘s Web and Stuart Little and has had the hearts of his readers ever since.

AlexaDP For this book, I believe the ESOL strategies, 4; linking lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge, 11; placing language in meaningful context, and 12, teaching to two objectives, language and content. For the UDL strategies, I think 7.2, optimizing relevance, value, and authenticity, 8.1 heightening salience of goals and objectives, and 3.; activating or supplying background knowledge are great for this book and story. 6y

Written by a Laura Ingalls Wilder Award Winner Dr. Seuss, this book concerns the journey of life and its challenges. It is written in the same style of other books like, as Green Eggs and Ham and The Cat in the Hat, but Oh, the Places You'll Go! has many specific characters including a narrator and the reader.
While I know a lot of people who got this book for graduation presents, I think this is a book that would be great for RT!

AlexaDP I think the ESOL strategies that could be used for this book would be, 6, continually monitoring student‘s comprehension, 10, teaching think, pair, share strategies in cooperative groups. AlexaDP I think the ESOL strategies, 20, listing the the most important words and phrases you use or plan to use in a presentation on a transparency or on the chalkboard, 23, giving enough wait time for second language learners to respond to questions, and 24, incorporating the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum. 6y

New York Times Best Seller, Wonder is a story that will definitely tug on your heartstrings. AlexaDP I think this book aligns with ESOL strategies 50, implementing strip stories, KWL acts etc and 17 providing contextual support through audio visuals, models and demonstrations. Also, this aligns with the UDL 1.2, offering alternatives for auditory information, and 1.3, offering alternatives for visual information. 6y

Once he leaves, the pigeon comes along and asks repeatedly if he can drive the bus.

AlexaDP ESOL strategy 26 maintaining a library of supplementary books and workbooks written in simple English. Also, this aligns with UDL 7.3 and minimizes threats and distractions. 6y
