Tonight we spent our reading time learning about Mars. Simple kids book that had some neat facts. It was easy for an 8 year old to follow along. The fact he enjoyed learning the most was that the North and South Poles have dry ice.

BiblioLitten Awesome! Do you have any more recommendations for non-fiction reads? My son is 7, and they are discussing non-fiction books in school. Or any books that your child really enjoyed in the past year. 😊 3d
dabbe 🤩🤩🤩 3d
Jess861 @BiblioLitten we have so many...let me go through the bookshelves and I'll post some that he's loved the most. Lately he has been enjoying National Geographic Weird but True (more facts then a book) and who would win (animals) books. What is your guy into? 2d

Jess861 @BiblioLitten for fiction he isn't the strongest reader so he has been more into comics (dog man, investigators and bad guys). He has also recently gotten into Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He loved me reading him Dragon Masters and I think he's a strong enough reader to start reading those on his own now. (edited) 2d
BiblioLitten Thank you! I‘ll look into Investigators and Dragon Masters (he also likes Dragon Hunters). 🐉 23h
Jess861 @BiblioLitten There are a ton of Dragon Masters books in the series and they are fairly cheap to buy off of scholastic or we've always been able to find them at libraries 🙂 21h

There was a bookshop on the way home from an appointment. Asked the teenager whether she'd like to go in for a look. She replied "you're going to snob at the English books and I won't find the mangas I'd like to read."

flying_monkeys Love the design on those sprayed edges. 😍 3d
julesG @flying_monkeys That's why I bought it. The It being Language of Dragons. It was only €3 more than the large international paperback edition. But so worth it. It's even stunning under the dust jacket. Girl's Guide doesn't have a dust jacket but has interesting interior art; it's for the teenager. 3d

Most of my current 30ish library checkouts... Yeah that's probably about right for my reading ratio these days, my stuff to kids books. #raisingreaders

One of my favourite things to do each evening - as our son calls it - "Our special reading time". We each read our books together for 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime. It's become part of our bedtime routine and it really is special. Tonight he is reading Dog Man while I continue West with Giraffes.

TEArificbooks I love that time too. We call a reading party 2w
Jess861 @TEArificbooks I love that! Maybe we will change it to reading party when our daughter is old enough to read with us! 2w

The kids and I went to the library this morning and got a pretty good haul. Even though our boy struggled and disliked reading for the longest time he is now quite the reader! Once reading started clicking for him he started really enjoying books! He now reads every night for at least an hour.

Wes‘ class did a blind book exchange. This one went right into the donate/sell pile😂 Honestly they‘re 4! But then I realized that some other parent is probably equally annoyed that they got a Sesame Street book with one paragraph per page 😂😂 #raisingreaders

JackOBotts

Seeking book recommendations for my 10 y.o. son. He‘s in 4th grade and dipping toes into horror…he‘s been allowed to watch some scary movies (The Omen, The Conjuring, The Shining, It (1990 miniseries), Signs, The Sixth Sense).

He‘s wanted to read Stephen King, so for his birthday he got The Eyes of the Dragon & The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. He‘s devouring these books…

Any recommendations for where to steer him next? Thanks, Litsy! 💜🩷

JackOBotts No nightmares from the reads/movies. He‘s also reading some of my Fear Street books from childhood, but not as fast as the King novels. I will add that we‘re trying to avoid excessive language, sex, gore in the books at the moment (good luck with King!), but he also understands the balance. #raisingreaders 🥰 (edited) 2mo
Lauredhel Is he too old for Goosebumps? I feel like ten isn't quite too old yet? 2mo
Lauredhel More YA but a mix: Anna Dressed in Blood, Wilder Girls,Miss Peregrine series, Shirley Jackson, Dread Nation, Hold Me Closer Necromancer series (humour /horror), Through the Woods, Kaaron Warren, Holly Black, Mira Grant, some T Kingfisher, Monstrumologist, Claire Legrand, NK Jemisin, None Shall Sleep 2mo

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘ve not read them myself but I do get asked for the Five Nights At Freddy‘s books reasonably often at the library (we shelve them in teen) 2mo
PathfinderNicole I have a 7th grade horror fan myself and he LOVES the Five Night‘s at Freddy‘s books! There are full length novels and oodles of short story collections. There are also a couple based off the kids horror game Hello Neighbor. Try Mary Downing Hahn or Betty Wright for older kid friendly horror too 2mo
Billypar I read this as an adult a few years ago, but it's one I wished I read as a kid because it's so, so creepy and original. Not at all like adult horror if he's reading King, but I don't think it feels too young either. 2mo
JackOBotts @Lauredhel @thegirlwiththelibrarybag @PathfinderNicole @Billypar ~ thank you for all these recs! 🙌🏼 Time for me to do some reading - I mean, research -of my own! Gotta catch up with his King titles first…or simultaneously! 📚📚 2mo

Pickpick

I decided to have Jace join me for #foodandlit this month. This is an adorable book about a Malaysian boy who wants to be able to cook delicious food with his grandma & aunties, although that is usually frowned upon in their culture. His aunties try to snub him but grandma will have none of it & he joins them in the kitchen to prepare food for the Lunar New Year. It soon becomes an annual tradition. And as a bonus, there are recipes in the back!

TheBookHippie I took this out of the library we loved it!!! 4mo

Book shopping!

Not sure how this one escaped my radar in 2022, but I just read about it the other day and then read all the wonderful Litsy reviews and just had to have it.

Grabbed #18 in the Dragon Masters series for my 8 year old - anyone else's kids love this series? He's whipping through them, and we can't keep them on the shelves at the library! #RaisingReaders
