“I carried only memories in my heart.”
I came across this book looking for another and had to check it out. The artwork made of stones is moving and the story the author shares of how she came upon the Syrian artist‘s work is an important addition to this picture book story of refugees. The overdrive readalong version is in both English and Arabic, making it even more special.

This wonderful book carries a message of hope and renewal for the refugees displaced by war in the story. Told with clever stone portraits, alongside Arabic and English words, this is a lesson in acceptance and understanding of what people have been going through now and many times over in our history.

#ReadingResolutions Day 14: Who would have thought that a #Stone can be transformed into such exquisitely moving art? There is a lengthy Foreword written by Margriet that shared how she was inspired by Badr‘s art as shared through Facebook. Nizar Ali Badr still lives in Latakia, Syria. He has a rooftop studio where he puts together the stones he gathers from the nearby beach and transforms into artistic pieces like the ones you see in this book.⬇️

1. Leaves! Each year, my children and I create art from leaves. This year, we‘ve added rocks à la Nizar Ali Badr (see his illustrations in tagged book).
2. Next TBR: On Tyranny
3. White chocolate!
4. Allergic to grass!
5. Marigold yellow yarn to crochet a sweater for myself?

julesG Allergic to grass? Pollen, or the whole plant? Just curious, since my son gets itchy pimples on his ears when he gets into contact with freshly mown grass/lawn. There are strange allergies out there. 7y
Wbabdullah @julesG the pollen and the plant! Pollen in general is my enemy, but if my skin gets into contact with grass, I also get red itchy bumps in place of contact. It‘ll look like I have a skin disease but it‘s a rash. So I don‘t touch grass. And I love to garden so...my skin is always covered! 7y
julesG @Wbabdullah Ouch! I am allergic to pollen, too. So far no contact allergies and our pediatrician said my son might outgrow this rash. So, fingers crossed. 7y

Wbabdullah I hope he does! It makes it hard to have a picnic and enjoy outdoors sometimes! 7y

Then the birds stopped singing.
People began to leave our village.
First a trickle, then a stream,
across dusty fields under a burning sun,
a stream driven by hope.
Mothers, fathers, children,
seeking a better place, a better life.

Nizar Ali Badr, a Syrian artist, uses only stones to create the emotional images in this #picturebook about #refugees. It's amazing and powerful and I highly recommend it.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I just googled and read an article about him! Wow ❤️ 7y
Lindy @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I just keep looking at his art. So amazing! 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Would be cool if he sold it!! It's so beautiful! I probably wouldn't be able to afford it tho 😉 7y
Lindy @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Information about the artist is included in the picture book. Apparently, the artist has so little money, he can't even afford glue to make his artwork permanent. He takes them apart and reuses the stones. 7y

Told from the perspective of a young girl, this
Syrian immigration story begins before the war and moves through the families journey to a new country.

Amazing rock-art pictures from Syrian artist Nizar Ali Badr accompany the text, conveying both movement and emotion. A forward tells the story of the author and illustrator working together, and the books ends with resources.
