A woman attempts to flee her abusive husband in a thriller The New York Times Book Review calls an unforgettable reading experience. Overworked cocktail waitress Sherry Reynard doesnt expect much anymore from her husband, Ward, whom shes supported for years. A struggling writer and sometimes-junkie coddled by his wealthy parents, Ward spends his days lost in a fog of self-pity and hallucinations. Then, one morning, he attacks his wife in a sudden, unprovoked, violent fit of rage. When he turns on their three-year-old son, Johnny, Sherry bashes Ward into submission, grabs her boy, and runs. As Johnny recuperates in the hospital, Sherry rents a room in a boarding houseamong a group of outcastsanxious to escape her marriage and her memories. But when her vindictive in-laws file a suit for custody of Johnny, Sherrys oppressive world starts closing in. She needs someone on her side. When new boarder Clifford Stone arrives, hes just what Sherrys looking for. Charming and sympathetic, hes promised to be there should Sherry ever need himhes also been hired by Wards calculating father to insinuate himself into her life. Clifford has been paid well to love Sherry, manipulate her, destroy her reputation, and, if need be, even worse. The Balloon Man was made into Claude Chabrols classic 1970 film, La Rupture (The Breach). A gripping suspense novel, it will have you flipping your wig all the way to the last page (Kirkus Reviews). Old fashioned suspense has given way to contemporary trauma and youll be flipping your wig all the way to the last page. . . . You wont want to finish it. Kirkus Reviews

Pickpick

Sherry's trying to divorce her abusive hubby and get custody of their kid, meanwhile the husband's dad sets in to trip her up any way possible. If you're looking for a good, clean read w/bite this convoluted mystery may be just for you. It's original publication was nearly 50 years ago, so there are times the writing seems ever so slightly dated. Mostly, however, it's going to keep you glued to the page until the whole ridiculous mess is sorted.

Settling in to start this creepy sounding beauty. Never heard of it before, but apparently this title was first published in the late 60s/early 70s. Seeing as mine is an ARC and the book's not due to publish til next month, I'm thinking it must be the first time it has been released in e-copy. 📖🍷🎈

Alfoster Yes, read this ARC too! Interesting but wait for the title to be clear only at the end! 8y
monkeygirlsmama @Alfoster So, um, yeah that didn't go the way I expected at all. I thought the title was going to become clear in a totally different way. It worked out though! 8y
Alfoster Yeah, but makes more sense when you consider pub date, right? Would be a different story today! 8y
