Pickpick

(Translated and filmed as The Song of Bernadette.) This is a historical novel about the Marian apparitions at Lourdes. Werfel accepts the miracles at face value and uses them to explore the clash between faith and modernism, also the challenge of reconciling one's worldview to undeniable facts that contradict it. Though I am neither Catholic nor any other sort of religious, these themes resonate with me and I found it more engaging than expected.

swynn By the way ... this is a library copy, and all the markings on the title page are standard marks made by the library's cataloger. For old-school catalogers and the über-nerdy: the cataloger has made an error. Can you spot it? 6y
swynn The double-stroke under "D" in "DAS" indicates the letter under which the title should be indexed. Since "DAS" is an article, the double-stroke should be under the "L". (See? I told you it was über-nerdy.) 6y

The Song of Bernadette | Franz Werfel

For faith is not a function of the soul. It is the soul itself in its last nakedness.
