Christopher Award Winner"Los Angeles Times" Bestseller"Washington Post" Top 100 Books of the Year Selection A stunning literary survival story of three young Sudanese boys, two brothers and a cousinhailed by the "Los Angeles Times" as a moving, beautifully written account, by turns warm and tender. Between 1987 and 1989, Alepho, Benjamin, and Benson, like tens of thousands of young boys, took flight from the massacres of Sudan s civil war. They became known as the Lost Boys. With little more than the clothes on their backs, sometimes not even that, they streamed out over Sudan in search of refuge. Their journey led them first to Ethiopia and then, driven back into Sudan, toward Kenya. They walked nearly one thousand miles, sustained only by the sheer will to live. "They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky" is the three boys account of that unimaginable journey. With the candor and the purity of their child s-eye-vision, Alephonsian, Benjamin, and Benson recall by turns: how they endured the hunger and strength-sapping illnessesdysentery, malaria, and yellow fever; how they dodged the life-threatening predatorslions, snakes, crocodiles and soldiers alikethat dogged their footsteps; and how they grappled with a war that threatened continually to overwhelm them. Their story is a lyrical, captivating, timeless portrait of a childhood hurled into wartime and how they had the good fortune and belief in themselves to survive."

I 100% feel this book should be added to all high school reading lists! Everyone should read this book actually. It by turns broke my heart and fiercely angered me. The opening quote is “When two elephants fight, it is the grass that gets trampled” this is the story of three boys who wander Africa trying to escape the war in the Sudan. #readingafrica2022 #sudan @Texreader @Librarybelle

Librarybelle Wow! This sounds amazing! 2y
KristiAhlers @Librarybelle it was really very good. Told by each of the three boys. It‘s books like this that TOTALLY puts a bad day into perspective. 2y

I don‘t think I‘ve ever read a more heart-wrenching book. In their own words, three lost boys of Sudan tell of the years of horrific experiences before being allowed to resettle in the USA. Dangers from people, wild animals, the elements, starvation and lack of water, miles upon miles of walking: all of this for years! These children had been separated from their parents as young as 4 or 5 years old. 4/5⭐️s 👇🏻

Wife I couldn‘t find any current info about the authors, but I would be interested in knowing how life in the USA turned out for them. I watched a very interesting documentary years ago about other Lost Boys acclimating to life in the USA. It was very moving. It was called God Grew Tired of Us. After learning about them, I realize that I have nothing to complain about that matters. #gratitude 6y
RebelReader I read this one a few years ago and it still haunts me. It really puts our troubles into perspective doesn‘t it? 6y
Wife @RebelReader It truly does. Another really good book is 6y
RebelReader @Wife Yes, That was a good one too! 6y

The tagged book is an excellent read for anyone interested in refugees or Sudan. It's also the right color for #shadesofautumn and #fallcolors #fallintobooks #autumnreads @RealLifeReading @Tiffy_Reads

Tamra Want to read! 7y
Lcsmcat @Tamra Have you read What is the What? It's another look at the so-called lost boys of Sudan and their experience in the U.S. 7y
Tamra @Lcsmcat What is the What! Yes, it's a favorite; eye opening and humbling. When I think I've had a bad day or have a "problem" I think of the Lost Boys and frankly, I'm fortunate. (edited) 7y

Two books about the Sudanese conflict before the birth of South Sudan, and the #refugees experiences first in Kenya, then in the US.

Wow. Story of 3 Lost Boys of Sudan. Tragic story I knew nothing about...I'm very glad I read this.

shawnmooney Wasn't it great? Back when it was first published I was in contact with the writers by email (trying to arrange a reading in Vancouver, which unfortunately did not transpire) and got a copy signed and inscribed by all of them, which I treasure! 8y
