Air-Conditioned Nightmare
Air-Conditioned Nightmare | Henry Miller
5 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
In 1939, after ten years as an expatriate, Henry Miller returned to the United States with a keen desire to see what his native land was really like--to get to the roots of the American nature and experience. He set out on a journey that was to last three years, visiting many sections of the country and making friends of all descriptions. The Air-Conditioned Nightmare is the result of that odyssey.

Bailedbailed

First of all, I want to say that I am a big Henry Miller fan. I loved the books that comprised The Rosy Crucifixion and both Tropics, among others. But this one was just a big, long-winded tirade against America. After 50 pages or so, I got the message: America is an ugly-ass country polluted by ugly-ass people. Thanks, Henry. Fun read. I bailed before I hit page 60. Life is too short.

Mehso-so

I don't get it. I like Henry Miller. I, too, take issue with America's obsession with empty "progress" and materialism. Many parts of this book resonate today (Americans as a vulgar mob easily led astray by con men? Check.) Then why did it leave me so cold? Perhaps because for every insightful critique there are pages upon pages that are nothing more than an old man venting his spleen, all venom and no wit. A shame for a writer so talented.

IamIamIam Even acclaimed authors leave a clunker here or there, I suppose. I'm sorry you were disappointed! 4y

Not book related but after waiting all summer because the air conditioners were on back order we finally got one installed today. I couldn't read at all this summer because it was just so hot and uncomfortable - I can finally get back into reading again!

SW-T Yay! Stay cool and happy reading! It‘ll be much more enjoyable for you now. 😊 4y

Princess really enjoys when the comforter is on the floor. We were told parts of our AC were bad but the home warranty company won‘t pay for a new one or to fix it since it still turns on. We decided to put it on last night and it drew so much power that the house electricity went in and out a few times. Oops. We put in another service call with the warranty company so we shall we what happens.

Bostonmomx2 That makes me mad. You pay them to fix or replace. Maybe go break it completely 😊 7y
CoffeeNBooks Uggh. How frustrating! 😭 7y
TheLibrarian @Bostonmomx2 @CoffeeNBooks This company is sooo frustrating. This is the 2nd thing that‘s gone wrong with the house that they won‘t pay for. Trying our luck one more time before our contract expires in 10 days. 7y

TheLibrarian @Alfoster Princess says thank you!!! 7y
Bostonmomx2 @TheLibrarian I‘m going to be buying a home warranty soon, what company are you with? 7y
TheLibrarian @Bostonmomx2 American Home Shield which is the one of the most known companies but we‘ve had zero luck with them. I‘ll let you know if they actually pay for a new air conditioner (or at least fix it). 7y
rubyslippersreads @TheLibrarian @Bostonmomx2 I have that company too. So far they've been fine for small things, but I've never had to call them for anything big—yet. 😬 7y
TheLibrarian @rubyslippersreads @Bostonmomx2 That‘s good! Our 1st issue wasn‘t big but they wouldn‘t pay because it was a “preexisting” condition even though it checked out fine on our inspection. 7y
Bostonmomx2 @TheLibrarian oh I‘m so glad I asked. I was going to go with them. I think I‘ll go with who we used on our previous house. Our a/c went out and they fixed it without problem. Now I just need to remember who it was lol 7y
