A kingdom beset by monsters . . .A disease that weakens and destroys . . .An epic poem and a hero of long ago . . .A story of danger and desperation. The Two Princesses of Bamarre couldn't be more different. Princess Addie is fearful and shy. Her deepest wish is for safety. Princess Meryl is bold and brave. Her deepest wish is to save the kingdom of Bamarre. They are sisters, and they mean the world to each other. Then disaster strikes, and Addie -- terrified and unprepared -- sets out on a perilous quest. In her path are monsters of Bamarre: ogres, specters, gryphons, and dragons. Addie must battle them, but time is running out, and the sister's lives -- and Barmarre's fate -- hang in the balance.Gail Carson Levine left her mark on fantasy with her well-loved 1998 Newbery Honor book Ella Enchanted. Now she has created another shimmering and tapestried landscape of fantasy and fairies. Bamarre and the journeys of its two princesses will burn themselves into the minds of readers, and all will relish this moving saga about two sisters groping their way toward heroism.

One of my favorite stories from childhood, I could listen to this story over and over. GCL really knows how to deliver a good story, keeping readers rooting for Adi and she finds her courage, getting your heart pounding as Meryl fights her own battles, and bringing a classical history in with Drualt, this is a 5 star story.

I know this is something you might want to overlook thinking it‘s too kiddish but it‘s a great book. Read it years ago and it still beats a lot of books I‘ve read here recently to be honest.

Still love this book so much 😭 Compelling and devoted sister main characters, rich fantastical world, tricky creatures, a little romance, and a happy ending.

I don‘t quite know how to review this, so for now I‘ll just blurb it.

Addie has always stayed behind, allowing Meryl to be the brave and adventurous princess. But Meryl falls victim to the Gray Death and Addie must try to save her.

It isn‘t quite what I expected, and I hate Levine for the tears at the end. I didn‘t need that today!

Smangela I was going to say the cover reminded me of Ella Enchanted, now I see it‘s by Gail Carson Levine too! Stacking this! 6y

My pick for Day 5 of #sizzlinsummerbooks is a longtime favorite of mine. Bugs are one of Addie's many, many fears, and the first one she conquers 💪🏼 🕷 I've had this book easily for at least ten years (and it shows with the taped spine and cover). I never get tired of this story 📖👸🏻 #julybooks #fairytales #princesses #bug

Linear That was going to be my first pick, I read it like nearly 17 years ago now. And I remember enjoying it a lot, however I decided to go with the Vampire Academy for besties since the two were sisters but I'm glad somebody else had the same mindset as I did. 7y
Kaitlyn.keith.529 @Linear This is probably my favorite story. I had to use it somewhere lol I think it's a good fit though 👌🏼 (edited) 7y

Best childhood memory ever. Me and my friends made a game of the story line and the fights over who would be addie were so over dramatic.

Like a lot of people on here, I'm not a big #reread fan, but there are two authors who were so special to me as a kid (#AnnMMartin & #GailCarsonLevine) that sometimes I just have to go back to these stories. I feel weird that my only rereads are kids books but they have such a special place in my heart (and they're easy to read so I don't feel like I'm wasting time I should have reserved for others!)👍

bmsddk Very nice picture 😀 The Two Princesses of Bamere was my favourite Levine book as a kid! 8y
nrheckel @bmsddk mine too!!! And I felt then (and now!) like it's so underappreciated!! Where was its movie?? I really loved Ella Enchanted but The Two Princesses of Bamarre was soooooooo gooooood 8y
bmsddk Agreed, it does not get enough attention!! My copy started falling apart, haha. It has PERFECT movie material -- powerful sister love (way ahead of you, Frozen), strong relatable protagonists, tons of magic and magical creatures, plot twists almost every chapter, some romance thrown in...and that ending 😂 I also thought Fairest by her was also underrated. What did you think of that one? 8y

nrheckel @bmsddk exactly!!! I've probably read that book more times than any other hahaha. I actually only read Fairest once a long time ago and don't remember it at all! Maybe it's time for a reread! My other favorite was The Wish which also would have made an excellent movie 8y
bmsddk Fairest is a fun one 😊 The Wish would make a great movie! It's still highly relevant today and can easily be adapted to suit the current generation. I read it once or twice as a kid (read it younger than the target audience, but I was in a kick for all things Levine, and my Mom never held back our reading interests). What I mostly remember is shock -- it was so refreshingly unlike anything I'd read before! What did you think of Ever? 8y
bmsddk What were some of your favourite things about The Two Princesses and The Wish? 8y
nrheckel Those three are actually the only ones that really stuck with me! I think I've read all of her books but those ones, especially Ella Enchanted and the two princesses were so unlike anything else I'd read. I really love modern fairytales and those ones were so good. Also I always gravitate toward books that focus on strong women and Levine does that so well 8y

It was way more difficult choosing my #3FictionalCharacter than I thought it would be!

Here are the three fictional characters that I think best represent me

1. Princess Addie from The Two Princesses of Bamarre.
2. Pearl from Steven Universe.
3. Sailor Jupiter from the Sailor Moon anime and manga.

All three characters are courageous, helpful, and dedicated to their people, which is what I aspire to be everyday :)

This is a book generally meant for 9-12 year olds but it is still amazing in my 20s. It's not the brave princess that goes on the adventure, but the timid one. Can't go wrong with talking dragons, either!
