How‘s the Essen Tasch, @Elisa ? I‘m loving it! Also, the more of her books I read, the more I love Schwab‘s writing. I really like her style.
Sorry for not posting this sooner. ^^;

Elisa The Essen Tasch was very exciting! I finished the book last week. It had been so long since the last update, and you seemed to be reading other books, so I thought maybe you needed to change gears for a while (as a mood reader, I get that). Now I‘m reading Nevernight and The Darkest Minds. 6y
Aurys @Elisa Ah, I‘ll have to finish it then! I‘ve just been busy and reading sporadically, which was why I was switching books. I figured you were busy too, so I waited on posting the discussion! My bad. It seems we‘ve out-polited each other. :) Thanks for doing the buddy read with me, anyways! 6y

I really, really wanted to like this one.
This is my first Jane Yolen novel and I was loving every minute... until the ending.
It felt like what should have been another 60 pages was shoved into 10. The final reveal was abrupt, and the promised twist (not Arthur pulling the sword from the stone) was lackluster. I‘m glad I got this one for free.
If not for the sudden and confusing ending, this one would have been a pick!
What did you guys think?

Not a new release, but definitely #MostAnticipated for me!
I just recently started playing D&D with a group of friends and we‘re loving it, so I was overjoyed to finally get some shiny new copies of the three core rulebooks.
Many glorious battles ahead!

“For two hours?”
Elend nodded sheepishly.
“There were books involved.”
When is Elend not a #RelatableCharacter to book nerds? I mean, he brings books to parties!
Trying to catch up on #ReadingResolutions after my trip. Sorry for being gone so long- glad to be back! @Jess7

Sorry for neglecting the #BuddyRead , @Elisa ! Here‘s the discussion post for Part 7. ^^ Hopefully Lila comes back around in this section...

Elisa No worries at all! I like that this is a chilled buddy read 💜 Thank you for creating the post! Enjoy your weekend away ☀️ (edited) 6y
Elisa Oooh this was much more fun!! A&R *fans self*, Kell being a little less brooding, and Lila being her usual smartass self... and I‘m kind of almost ready to forgive her 😅 6y
Aurys This was a really fun section! Things are heating up. Literally, in some cases- A&R... whooo! Though Kell is being less angsty, I feel like Rhy‘s making up for it. Poor Rhy ;-; I‘m interested to see how the Essen Tasch will go! 6y
Aurys Also- Holland. We‘ve kind of skimmed over him, but he‘s got a part to play with Osaron. Thoughts? 6y

Discussion post for my #BuddyRead with @Elisa !

My thoughts are in the comments :)

I love the divider papers in the US edition. I could stare at those map sections all day. Wish there was a map of the Londons!

Aurys @Elisa I haven‘t quite finished the section yet, but... First off- you were right about Lila and Alucard! Also, the Veskans and Faroans are interesting races. Not sure what I think yet. 7y
Elisa I was just thinking That! Yours have the maps! Awesome 😃 7y
Elisa Ok, first thought: Alucard is a manipulative jackass. Unfortunately he is also SO hot. (🤦🏻‍♀️ 7y
See All 11 Comments
Elisa @Aurys to be honest it surprised me that it happened so soon! But I also kind of love it. He‘s a scoundrel and completely untrustworthy! *she says, dreamily* 😅 7y
Elisa @Aurys I love hearing about the different countries, races and customs!! Also, Kell has been all angsty and it was really rubbing me the wrong way! But now that Lila has returned maybe he‘ll shake it off a bit! Speaking of Lila, I‘m a little concerned that she plans to participate in the tournament. That‘s incredibly irresponsible, even for her! 7y
Aurys @Elisa Yeah, her relationship with Alucard is an interesting development! I‘m not certain what I think of his character but manipulative is a good way to put it! 7y
Aurys The other races are really cool! I hope we see more of them in depth. :D I don‘t like Kell‘s angst so much either. Him and Rhy both! I‘m worried about that too. She‘s only been training in magic for a few months and has decided to compete in the world‘s most elite magic tournament?? How is she even going to get in? 7y
Elisa @Aurys I have no idea. But it's a thing about Lila, that just when I feel I can relate to her more and feel closer to the character, she does something that makes me dislike her 😐 (edited) 7y
Elisa @Aurys have you already started the next part? 7y
Aurys @Elisa I have actually! Have you? 7y
Elisa @Aurys a few pages in, going to continue now 😊 7y

The end of this one kills me every time. Poor Wax.
Sanderson has a gift for plot twists. They surprise you even on a reread! My love for Wax, Wayne, and Marasi grows with every chapter, but Steris hasn‘t grown on me yet- hopefully she‘ll get more time later.
I do wish that the plot wasn‘t so centered on Wax, though. At times it feels like the other characters‘ stories all depend on Wax‘s. I hope this will change next book.
What did you guys think?

Loving this so far! Just got through Part One. Lila is amazing. Maybe a little intimidating... but amazing.
@Elisa How are you liking it?

Elisa I am enjoying it more than the first! In fact I confess, I couldn‘t stop reading 🙈 I love the peek at Lila‘s life as a pirate! For some reason, Alosa from Daughter of the Pirate King came to mind for an immediate comparison... in which obviously Lila was by far the best of the two (truth be told, I didn‘t like Alosa to start with, so...) 😁 And Alucard is a very appealing character! 7y
Aurys @Elisa I can‘t blame you! I almost read ahead XD I haven‘t read Daughter of the Pirate King but I definitely need to, if Alosa is anything like Lila! I didn‘t actually like Lila at first, believe it or not, but I love her now. ^^; I think Alucard is really intriguing. He‘s got some sort of plot-influencing secret, I think. I‘m loving this so far! To part two? 7y
Aurys @Elisa Also, I have a pet theory that Lila is some sort of untrained Antari, between the glass eye reveal in the last book and her powers growing in this one. Maybe she‘s from one of the other Londons? 7y
Elisa @Aurys yes, I have a similar theory! And I‘m ready to discuss part two whenever you are! 😊 I don‘t think Alosa is very similar to Lila, she is more like an obnoxious teen (ok Lila can be obnoxious but in a fun way). 7y

@Elisa I can start that buddy read now ;)

Elisa Aaah I‘m in the middle of Glass Sword! Well 1/3 through 😬 I can work on finishing by next weekend, if you feel like waiting one week — if not I understand! I have been very excited about books and unable to hold back 😅 7y

I don‘t have a lute to use in this picture, so I went with the next best thing- guitar :)

One thing I loved about this book was how it broke fantasy tropes. Kvothe tells his life story like it is- long, messy, morally grey, and full of change. There‘s little plot armor, besides Kvothe‘s own cleverness.
But... I didn‘t love Denna‘s character, and the book left me with more questions than I had when I started!
What did you guys think of this book?

jfalkens I loved it and also hated Denna for Kvothe. I like Auri better for him. 7y
Aurys @jfalkens I‘ll second that! I liked Auri a lot more than Denna. Denna just grated on my nerves for some reason... 7y
jfalkens @Aurys mine too! Patrick Rothfuss said at a book signing(one of my Facebook friends went too) that "you are supposed to like Denna". I'm like nah I don't lol 7y
Aurys @jfalkens Haha, me too! She was just sort of unlikable somehow... 7y

Tiny #bookhaul from the local thrift store- I was so happy to find a copy of a book I‘ve been wanting to read for only a dollar!
The cover‘s a little warped, but it doesn‘t affect the inside ;)
Do you ever go thrift store book shopping? It‘s my weakness- that‘s how my TBR pile got so big! :,D

dreamsleepread Thrift shopping for books is literally the best! I've found so many books at craxy low prices in thriftshops!! ✨Recently i bought a practically brand new hardcover copy of Inferno by Dan Brown for $3! 7y

So, the first 250 pages of this book were TORTURE to read. The main character, Elloren, was a vindictive, naive pain as a protagonist.
And then we got a character arc. As soon as Elloren started growing, the book got good. Even the writing seemed to vastly improve later in the book.
If you read this one, don‘t DNF because of the beginning. The second half is great and totally worth waiting for!
Have you read The Black Witch? What did you think?

Elisa Oooh that‘s good that you say that, because I‘ve heard a couple of people say that it was dull and they DNFed! Good to know it gets better. Thanks, it‘s back on my wishlist! 7y
Aurys @Elisa Oh wow! Yeah, it does take its time getting started, but it gets good once it speeds up :) Hope you like it as well! 7y

I really, really wanted to like this book.

I wanted it to be a nerdy adventure story, but I got a philosophy text. It seemed like it wanted to make you think deeply about technology, books, and the meaning of immortality, but it all just fell flat for me. The story was disjointed and felt too unrealistic for the setting, and the secondary characters were more interesting than the main. It was a pain to finish.

What did you think of this book?

Elisa I haven‘t read it, but I wanted to comment to say that this is a very good review! Thank you for mentioning the points I wonder about when choosing a book 👍🏼👍🏼 7y

*~*~*‘Kell wore a very peculiar coat.‘*~*~*

After two DNFs in a row, it was nice to read something truly good.
I loved the writing style- brought me straight into the magical world of the Londons. The world was immersive, and I loved the characters. Lila Bard was one of the most unique characters I‘ve come across, and she grew on me as the book went on.
Would definitely recommend!!

Now I need the second book...

Elisa Oooh I have the second book but haven‘t started it yet, I‘m thinking probably some time in May. Let me know if you want to do a buddy read! 7y
Aurys @Elisa That sounds great! Would give me an excuse to buy the second book too ;) However, I‘m new to Litsy... how do buddy reads work exactly? ^^; 7y
Elisa @Aurys basically, if we can find a time that works for both of us to start the book, we start and then keep in touch with each other when we want to discuss specific parts. I‘ve never done one on Litsy so we‘d have to find a way to chat — on Insta and GR you can use Private Messages for that. 7y
See All 7 Comments
Aurys @Elisa Sorry for replying a day late, I‘ve been busy! That sounds great, I‘d love to- except I don‘t have Instagram or GR. ^^; Do you think it would still work on Litsy? 7y
Elisa @Aurys I suppose we could do it here, too, then others might jump in as well! We‘d just have to make sure to mark any spoilers. I just finished my book last night and I‘m getting ready to pick a new one — if you want we could start this now. If not, I can start something else and we can check in with each other in a couple of days, or set a date to start, if you prefer. Let me know what works best for you 🙂 (edited) 7y
Aurys @Elisa That would work! However I don‘t have a copy yet. I could get it within a couple weeks, though! :) 7y

Sanderson‘s fantasy novels are amazing and have so much depth to the world and magic systems, and plot twists that you won‘t see coming. Definitely would recommend!

I liked this one! Maybe not quite up to The Lunar Chronicle‘s level, but definitely did not disappoint.

Superheroes, a cool future world, and lots of adventure, although I liked some of the side characters far better than the main. Overall, a good read, but not up to the par of The Lunar Chronicles.

Have you read this one? What did you think? Are you on the side of the Renegades or the Anarchists?

Hey, I‘m Aurys! New to Litsy, seems like a great community. I‘m excited to waste time on here ;)

Also excited to read these three I picked up over the weekend, but especially for A Darker Shade of Magic. Horimiya is a great romance manga, and The Serpent‘s Secret was an impulse buy- Indian Percy Jackson, with a female protagonist? Yes, please. You‘re never too old for good middle grade :)
