Varieties of Exile
Varieties of Exile | Mavis Gallant
15 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
Mavis Gallant is the modern master of what Henry James called the international story, the fine-grained evocation of the quandaries of people who must make their way in the world without any place to call their own. The irreducible complexity of the very idea of home is especially at issue in the stories Gallant has written about Montreal, where she was born, although she has lived in Paris for more than half a century. Varieties of Exile, Russell Banks's extensive new selection from Gallant's work, demonstrates anew the remarkable reach of this writer's singular art. Among its contents are three previously uncollected stories, as well as the celebrated semi-autobiographical sequence about Linnet Muirstories that are wise, funny, and full of insight into the perils and promise of growing up and breaking loose.

I will call this a pick even though I didn't finish the collection. What I read, I liked, especially the Linnet Muir stories.

Sounds like a solid life plan to me!

Heading to Montréal for a whirlwind visit -- my parents went up yesterday from Toronto, and I am joining them today ? So naturally I had to continue my tradition of geographically appropriate reading.

writerlibrarian I hope it wasn't too 🥶. 5y

Unfortunately it's not practical to get #LostInFrance when you live in the U.S. and have only a 4-day vacation. But getting lost in Montreal is the next best thing- we greatly enjoyed all the delicious food, beautiful architecture, and rich culture. Didn't get to as many literary attractions as I'd hoped, but La Grande Bibliotheque library was incredible. Thanks again @tournevis @CouronneDhiver @LeahBergen for the recommendations!

Billypar @Cinfhen That sounds like a great idea for a trip- happy to pass on any info/recommendations ☺️ 5y
Suet624 @Cinfhen Ooooh, if you do go to Montreal and have the inclination to do a meet up, let me know. I'm not far from there. 5y
Suet624 I visited the Botanical Gardens on July 4th. A great thing to do when you want to leave the U.S. of A. I felt momentarily liberated! 5y
Billypar @Suet624 Sounds lovely! When our group left we all vowed to return- such an impressive city. 5y
Cinfhen I‘ll definitely let you know @Suet624 we‘re still just playing around with the idea. It‘s going to be a very spontaneous summer for us 🙃 5y

This was an enjoyable short story collection. I regret that I engaged with it as an audiobook because I found myself losing track of what was going on at points and I think that was more about me than the stories. I might revisit it in print. Lovely to insights into Montreal over time.

Decided last minute to go on a road trip to Montreal for Labor Day weekend! I've never been and always wanted to. Have any of you Littens been there? Anything fun you would recommend?

Quebecois littens, I‘m looking for bookish suggestions for my upcoming trip to Montreal! Any favorite bookstores or libraries to visit? I‘ll be there in a few weeks. Thanks!!

tournevis In Montreal, a trip to La Grande bibliothèque is a must. It's the central national library, it's beautiful and a must. 7y

tournevis The Word Bookstore, a very adorable English-language whole in the wall near McGill, 469 Rue Milton. 10 min walk from there, on Park near Sherbrooke is Papeterie Nota Bene, my fave stationary store 7y
tournevis On Sherbrooke, across from McGill University, is the famed Paragraph bookstore, also mostly English-language books. Another must. 7y
tournevis For French language (and a few English-language) bookstores, head for Avenue Mont-Royale and the metro station of the same name, and there are half a dozen used book stores including Bonheur d'occasion. Good art books to be had. 7y
tournevis And all the museums have nifty bookstores too. 7y
tournevis So do all the universities. 7y
KassKho For used books you should also visit Encore which is in the NDG area (unfortunately no close metro but buses!). I also work sometimes at the Indigo right beside paragraph is you want to visit :) 7y

Live from Montreal my belated #Recommendsday is this gorgeous collection by my #www Mavis Gallant. A friend mailed me this right after I had moved from Montreal to Stockholm and while they didn't help my homesickness, I absolutely adored these perceptive and brilliantly written stories.
