Is anyone else attended FIYAHCON this weekend? It‘s been great so far! Amazing talks and panels with Rebecca Roanhorse, Kwame Mbalia, tons of amazing BIAOC, about science fiction and fantasy. I‘ve been glued to my chair!

Nute What is this? 4y
heikemarie @Nute Fiyah, which is a magazine of black speculative fiction, is hosting an online convention this weekend! fiyahlitmag.com 4y
Nute Thanks for the info. I had heard of the magazine before either from Litsy or a podcast, but I didn‘t know about the convention. Checking it out now!🙂 4y

I don‘t like Joyce Carol Oates, I don‘t like feet, and I struggle with body horror, so it‘s been a fraught couple of days on Twitter. But my hold on LFE finally came through so I‘ve got Sunday plans! Arya is the perfect catpanion for my plans.

Today was the day that all the weight of COVID and the prospect of quarantining forever and not particularly enjoying spending every living second with my husband and worrying about where my kids are getting their meals and their hugs and their quiet reading time and dance parties came crashing down. Power was out most of the day. And culminated in me sobbing because Annabelle and Sebastian can‘t be together. And compulsively eating peach rings.

Bklover I love peach rings. And I get it. Sending love and support your way- ❤️❤️ Hang in there! 4y

It‘s my first day of teacher development before the 20-21 school year. Here is my classroom 😭 we read the tagged book over the summer for this week. I think some points it makes about what motivates and doesn‘t motivate people are very useful. It talks about ways to foster autonomy, mastery, and purpose, since those seem to be the key ingredients to intrinsically motivating people. ⬇️

heikemarie It talks about the ways in which our management and business systems are outdated. While it wasn‘t focused on children, there is stuff that can apply, a few of the studies were focused on kids, and the appendix has more resources to think about the applications of this stuff in schools. Like most brief business-oriented books, it was a little light on the science and context for me. ⬇️ 4y
heikemarie I also know my organization won‘t implement this stuff for its teachers, so it feels hypocritical to talk about it for kids. But this is also something I come to expect from professional development. 😬 4y
Pruzy Nice computer set up! 4y
heikemarie @Pruzy Thanks!! I like to say my husband‘s love language is technology, so he built this for me. It makes a huge difference for teaching online! 4y

Couching opposition to anti-racist speech and protest as a noble fight for freedom of speech is about protecting whites people from being criticized. It seems there is a belief among some white people that being accused of racism is far worse than actual racism.

quote
heikemarie
post image

There isn‘t anything notably, individually racist about the people who work in all of the institutions he [hypothetical typical black British man] interacts with. Some of the people will be black themselves. But it doesn‘t really matter what race they are. They are both in and of a society that is structurally racist, and so it isn‘t surprising when these unconscious biases seep out into the work they do when they interact with the general public.

This book is super readable, as all great nonfiction should be. I like getting to hear some history and perspective of a black person from Britain, and considering the similarities and differences in experience when compared to the US‘s history of race and racism.

I am so excited - my complete set of Redwall books came in today! Did you read something that made you laugh today? I am reading BWWF with some rising 8th graders this summer for virtual summer school & today we came upon a part I had forgotten about - the nun teacher the main character meets is described as having musty breath 😂 😂 which already was gross when Alvarez wrote it but telling someone they‘re musty is a legit insult nowadays 😂 the kids loved it. Pickpick

There‘s still time to sign up for and attend this event. An inspired thinker and writer and a timely conversation! #antiracism #blacklivesmatter #blackbooksmatter

Christine It was such a wonderful conversation! And I loved his idea for dealing with a racist friend by starting a bookclub with them and, after choosing a bunch of books that aren‘t about racism, sneaking one in that is! 😂 4y
heikemarie @Christine I liked it a lot! The casting issues were frustrating at first, I missed the beginning. I also liked the plug for book clubs! I thought his quote about teaching “black children they are not less because they have less, and white children that they are not more because they have more” was revelatory. 4y
Christine YES! That was profound. And yeah, the tech issues were a bummer. I thought about giving up bc I get so much daily Kendi wisdom via social media...but there is never too much Kendi wisdom. 4y

I‘ve been gone for a long time. Being perfectly frank, this is a really privileged space & I was having a hard time trusting people - I wonder & worry about what all of the nice folks here would do when confronted with situations of oppression. Also, the tone of the Litsy Facebook page was increasingly petulant. That being said, I love having a space to talk about books with other people who ❤️ books - I don‘t have that in real life. So... hi :)

Tove_Reads I don‘t follow Litsy on FB and I guess it‘s a good thing then! I‘ve found this to be a safe space, and people share really personal things and I‘ve seen no one being mean. Maybe I‘m just lucky with the Litten friends I have? Pretty much all the other social media platforms are awful because people are really mean. (edited) 4y
Katerina Welcome back ? I've never really bothered with the litsy FB page, but I love the atmosphere here on Litsy. Let's have a great reading summer and talk about books ? I've just started "Before the coffee gets cold" and am really pulled into the setting of the book. What are you reading? 4y
heikemarie @Tove_Reads I agree that social media in other spaces is totally toxic! I don‘t think people on Litsy are mean - I‘ve really only had one bad experience in that regard - but I find myself losing patience for Nice White Ladies in the current climate (and even before obviously). It‘s nothing so stark as meanness. There are definitely some truly wonderful community members here. ❤️ 4y
See All 23 Comments
heikemarie @Katerina I just saw that one and it looks so intriguing! I‘m reading Love, Unscripted - I thought it was a romance and I don‘t think it is and now I can‘t decide whether I like it but I keep reading so that has to count for something? 😂 😩 4y
Megabooks I‘m sorry that you‘re having a hard time trusting people. It‘s a very bold assumption that people on litsy aren‘t fighting battles of oppression. I personally am but haven‘t felt like sharing it publicly. There is a saying, “Be kind, for you do not know the trials other people are facing.” I worry that I‘m being unkind to you, and I‘m sorry if you‘re facing personal battles, but let‘s not make assumptions about others. 4y
Tove_Reads Yeah, I just skip certain things if and when I get annoyed. My only bad experiences here have been a few swaps, so not doing them anymore. Had some really good ones as well. It seems like there is always one main topic on the agenda and then it becomes too much, and gets a bit out of hand. Doesn‘t seem to matter what the subject is. 4y
CoffeeK8 Welcome back. 💕 I find I just follow the people I‘m really interested in and prune out the ones who make me uncomfortable. 4y
heikemarie @Megabooks I don‘t know you and don‘t made assumptions about your personal battles. I appreciate you speaking your mind. I think talking about books is interwoven with discussions of systems of oppression, though, & it‘s a privilege to talk about books in a way that ignores this. That was my point & my frustration during earlier times on the app. I‘ve been here some time and was very active, so it‘s not a statement I make off the cuff. 4y
heikemarie @CoffeeK8 I really hear this and will have to make sure to do that moving forward - Thank you for the re-welcome! 😊 4y
Megabooks @heikemarie then you might be interested in @Emilymdxn and @ChasingOm #integrateyourshelf posts. I‘ve found a lot of good books from BIPOC, other POC, and LGBTQIA+ authors through these posts. It always pays to read widely! While we can‘t control who has the privilege of Internet access (to be on Litsy) or the writers that get published, etc. we can share and support these authors. 4y
heikemarie @Megabooks thanks so much for the reccs! I agree with using our limited attention wisely for sure. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I second @Megabooks recommendation of the #integrateyourshelf tag and prompts. I struggle with people on social media, too. Some days we click, and others we don‘t. I try to be kind, but I‘m too old to put up with people‘s b.s. sometimes. So I speak my mind. It doesn‘t always go well ... either way, it‘s good to see you here again. 4y
heikemarie @Tove_Reads I‘m working on my ability to pick my battles. I really appreciate the welcome and thoughtful engagement! 💕 4y
KVanRead Welcome back 😊 4y
heikemarie @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m definitely diving into the hashtag! I respect that you speak your mind and appreciate the perspective. Some days it goes better than others for sure. 😂 thank you! 💕 4y

merelybookish We are (as is most of book culture, publishing, etc) a pretty white and privileged space. There are lots of nice white women on here, an identity I wrestle with. You guyssssss attempt #1 was pretty tasty. This is 1 cup milk (I used oat milk), 4 cookie scoops of butterscotch blondie ice cream, 4 scoops of vanilla caramel ice cream, 2 oz. vanilla vodka, 2 oz. butterscotch schnapps, and 4 Tbsp butterscotch instant pudding mix. Garnished with whipped cream, salted caramel drizzle (Smuckers brand), and gold sprinkles. A little watery, would halve the milk next time. Will try again tomorrow!

Littens, I need your help! This is my current set up in my (very small but cozy) office. On the left is my bookshelf and TBR cart, and on the right you can see the corner of my desk. Here‘s the question: my dad gave me two small “floating bookshelves” for my birthday. Should I install them under the quote, or on that blank wall to the right?

hermyknee I think it would look cool if you kind of had them on both making a V shape in that corner? Have you ever seen The Great Interior Design Challenge (3 seasons on Netflix!) - that show always gives me decorating inspiration! 5y
Butterfinger I vote for the blank wall. 5y

Ashley_Nicoletto This. Is. Disgusting. I wasn‘t a Nicholas Sparks fan before, but I‘m actively banning him after learning he‘s a garbage human. Also, I hate the crap he spouts about not being a romance author too. 6y
Rachel.Rencher What a smug bastard. Yep, he's cancelled. 6y
RvnclawWhovian Well this just makes me feel justified for never being a big fan. What an asshole 6y
kaysworld1 Oh this hurt, I enjoyed his books as well. Shame! 😡 6y
sprainedbrain I wasn‘t planning to read any of his books anyway, but he‘s definitely cancelled. 🙃 6y
batsy Ugh. To hell with him. Someone referred to him as the writer of books where "white woman fall in love with white men". And that worldview pretty much sums it up. Eww. 6y
BiblioLitten Never read him. Not going to bother. 😾 6y
PaperbackPirate Wow. Thanks for sharing! 5y

I have the joy of seeing Darnell Moore speak at my former school‘s College Signing Day. “Come, celebrate with me, that every day something has tried to kill me and has failed.”

It‘s Friday, I JUST got to the classic Stephenson move in this ARC of his new book out Tuesday (to completely change direction/time frame on this story making me scramble@to catch up), and I‘ve got a raspberry iced tea. Sometimes - only sometimes - being an adult is great.

Ericalambbrown First episode was amazing! 💕 6y
Katerina Finally!! Just a few more hours of work and then I can enjoy it! 6y
heikemarie @Ericalambbrown I loved it! @Katerina what did you think?! 6y
Katerina @heikemarie I didn't get around to it yesterday, but I've just watched the first episode and I really like it. I have to say that I have favourably predisposed every since they announced the casting, but it really lives up to my expectations. One of the few times where I don't mind that I'll be seeing the tv show's aesthetic when I'll be re-reading the book. On to episode 2 :) 6y

Pickpick

I loved this continuation of the story of the Wildes. Lady Boadicea, named after the warrior queen, presents a totally different face to the world. Afraid of being lumped in with her mother, who ran off with the help and left her children behind, she debuts for her season with modest and grace. But she's not fooling Lord Jeremy, a family friend who is staying at the castle while recovering from complications of his PTSD. Sexy, sweet, funny!

heikemarie This definitely counts as a #romantsy pick! I received this advanced copy book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Full review up at https://ireadthereforeiam.wordpress.com/ (edited) 6y

I enjoyed this book - an ambitious undertaking to connect history of “ideal“ women's body types to the introduction of black women through slavery into European society as the turning point of opinion on women's fatness. Provides a critical look at ways that men's contributions through art, society, &medicine continued to use norms as a way to degrade black women and oppress white women, and for white folk to continue to push white supremacy.

This was my favorite spot. Small, books stacked high, but the gentleman in charge obviously loved books and was an equal opportunity reader. We chatted about how we seem to spend more time reading reviews than actually reading. I‘m thrilled about all of the books I got at his spot.

Smrloomis 👍🏽 I loved There There so I‘ll be curious to hear what you think! 6y

I can‘t find the store in the database but this is from RiverRun Bookstore on Daniel St. it was cute with a carefully curated used book selection and some new. The woman was very kind and they sold cards made by adults with disabilities. Im@super excited to finally read The Proposal! #romantsy

TimSpalding Hey. Nice catch. I love that bookstore. It's in the system--both LibraryThing and as a book on Litsy--but the index isn't finding it. I'm working the problem. 6y
heikemarie @TimSpalding Awesome! I could have sworn I saw it there yesterday. Thanks for all you do Tim! 6y
TimSpalding @heikemarie Thanks. That one fixed. It's going to chew through the rest over the next 24h. 6y

Okay, I‘m home and I can show you all the awesome books I got! I‘ll do a post for each of the bookstores I went to. Portsmouth B&B has a great tap selection and my lunch was very tasty. They also do crafted coffee drinks so I could totally see myself here all seasons and all weather. I would seriously love to open something like it someday. I‘m really excited about the local beer cookbook!

The fear of the imagined “fat black woman” was created by racial and religious ideologies that have been used to both degrade black women and discipline white women.

Good morning Litsy family! I am heading up to Dover NH/Portsmouth/Portland ME (the best Portland) for the long weekend. I used to live in the area and have family here so I‘m all set on food and entertainment but I have an afternoon free where I‘d like to hit literally all the indies. Besides Print in Portland where should I go?

WhatWouldJaneDo It would be a ways from Portland, but if you're up for a bit of a pilgrimage go to the Big Chicken Barn. It's incredible! 6y
