For three years, Investigator Cassie Dewell has been on a hunt for a serial killer known as The Lizard King. She almost caught him...once. Working for the Bakken County, North Dakota sheriff s department, Cassie has set what she believes is the perfect trap and she has lured him and his truck to a depot. Standing by, ready to close the net, are half a dozen undercover officers, including Cassie s fiance Ian. But the plan goes horribly wrong, and the blame falls to Cassie. Disgraced, she loses her job and an investigation into her role is put into motion. At the same time, Kyle Westergaard, a troubled kid whom Cassie has taken under her wing, has disappeared, telling everyone he is going on a long-planned adventure. Kyle s grandmother begs Cassie to find him and with nothing else to do, she agrees all the while planning a new trap for The Lizard King. But Cassie is now a lone wolf. And in the same way that two streams converge into a river, Kyle s disappearance may have a more sinister meaning than anyone realizes. With no allies, no support, and only her own wits to rely on, Cassie must take down a killer who is as ruthless as he is cunning. But can she do it alone, without losing her own humanity or her own life?"

I wasnt in love with it. It was intriguing. I would have probably enjoyed it more had i read the first 3.

A tight mystery...A high speed chase from beginning to end.

Well, at least it‘s over. The first two in the series were pretty good but the last two - meh. Unrealistic police procedural action and mediocre dialogue aside, I think it was mostly the narration that brought me down.

#3 of The Highway Quartet finished and #4 started. This series started out strong but I‘ve enjoyed each book less than the one before. Still...I just have to know how it all ends.

I was in the mood to lose myself in a good crime novel/thriller and CJ Box books always work for me. It feels like a mini vacation to Montana/Wyoming, albeit one with serial killers. I wanted an engrossing, fast read before I went to work, and it delivered.

I've been a big fan of CJ Box since the beginning. I haven't missed a Pickett novel yet. I'm enjoying getting to know Cassie in this new series. The ending left me wanting more so I hope there's a next book! This book continues the story started in The Highway - which made me suspicious of semis, truck drivers, & truck stops. The setting of North Dakota & Montana is as much a character as the Lizard King. Looking forward to the next adventure!
