The Case of Comrade Tulayev
The Case of Comrade Tulayev | Victor Serge
8 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
One cold Moscow night, Comrade Tulayev, a high government official, is shot dead on the street, and the search for the killer begins. In this panoramic vision of the Soviet Great Terror, the investigation leads all over the world, netting a whole series of suspects whose only connection is their innocence—at least of the crime of which they stand accused. But The Case of Comrade Tulayev, unquestionably the finest work of fiction ever written about the Stalinist purges, is not just a story of a totalitarian state. Marked by the deep humanity and generous spirit of its author, the legendary anarchist and exile Victor Serge, it is also a classic twentieth-century tale of risk, adventure, and unexpected nobility to set beside Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls and André Malraux's Man's Fate.

Fantastic novel about the Stalinist purges, although I would find myself having to take a break from it every couple of chapters. There were so many dark and amazing reflections about what living in a country run by a paranoid man and ideologues putting their party's power over the good of the nation does to people's bodies, minds, and souls. Read if you're in the mood for more of that after your 2017 reread of 1984. #litsyatoz #catsoflitsy

schmia @bates_barb Omg! As soon as I saw your comment, I remembered a post of yours that I had liked and had meant to respond that my cat Drake looks a LOT like your #littenkitten. I remember I had to look twice at the photo to make sure it wasn't one of my posts of my cat. I'm glad you agree - the resemblance is super uncanny! (edited) 8y
bates_barb Floofy long-haired tabbies FTW! 8y
schmia @bates_barb Yes, no matter how many times I have to pull clumps of cat hair off my clothes at work! 8y
Berenices A comment about the book this time :-) It's my favourite book by this author. Wish he had written dozens more...but what a life he had! 7y

Perfectly sums up the madness and paranoia of Stalin's great purge. Serge lived through these chaotic and dangerous times, with his writing perfectly illustrating the betrayal of the revolution by the Soviet leadership. An essential read for anyone who wants to understand why communism ended up being doomed to failure

Nothing like a novel about authoritarianism, propaganda, and Russian interference in other countries' political affairs to celebrate President's Day in 2017.
