People Knitting: A Century of Photographs | Barbara Levine, Paige Ramey
7 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
People Knitting is a charming tribute in vintage photographs and printed ephemera to the ever-popular, often all-consuming, craft of knitting. When women posed with their knitting in the earliest nineteenth-century photographs, it demonstrated their virtue and skill as homemakers. Later, knitting became fashionable among the wealthy as a sign of culture and artistic ability. During the two world wars, images of nurses, soldiers, prisoners, and even knitting clubs composed of very serious small boysall with heads bent down, intent on knitting items (especially socks) for the troopsabounded. In the 1950s and 1960s, as snapshots became ubiquitous, knitters took on a jauntier air, posing with handiwork held proudly aloft. People Knitting is a quirky and fascinating gift for the knitter in your life.

Pickpick

I felt a part of a historic tradition of knitters as I perused this archival collection. It spans 100 years, starting in the 1860s. They‘re mostly anonymous women, men & children from the western world, captured working on their knitting, but some are familiar. Audrey Hepburn, Sojourner Truth, Mary Pickford & Doris Day are among those I recognized. You must flip to the index for information about each image. #knittersofLitsy

This photo made me giggle when I thought to myself, “He‘s knitting himself some clothing.” Then I read the sobering context: he‘s either a German or Italian merchant seaman in a detainment camp in North Dakota during WWII.

LeahBergen Geez. He‘s a pretty talented knitter, too! That ain‘t no garter stitch scarf. 😮 5y
Ostaff1 @LeahBergen I think that‘s a sweater sleeve!!! 😳 5y
julesG @LeahBergen @ostaff1 - either a sleeve or a very long stocking. Anyway, impressive handiwork. And, I guess he could consider himself lucky being allowed/given yarn and needles. I'm not sure it would have been similar had he been a US soldier in a German camp. 5y

Lindy @LeahBergen @Ostaff1 @julesG Knitting would be a good way to pass long hours of detainment. 5y
Ostaff1 @Lindy ND is cold. I wonder if he was knitting for the upcoming winter. I also note those are some funny looking needles—wood slivers, maybe? Unraveling something else to make a sweater, maybe? 5y
Lindy @Ostaff1 You could be right about the knitting needles, although I used a magnifying glass to have a closer look and they appear to be regular double pointed needles to me. He could have been as adept at creating needles as he appears to be at knitting. 5y

I was surprised to recognize people in this collection of photos: there are celebrities like Betty Grable, shown making baby booties for the child she‘s expecting. #knittersofLitsy

Ha! One of my sisters uses her feet like this to wind a skein into a ball. (The image is from 1943.) #knittersoflitsy

julesG Did that before I had a swift. I used to sit on the floor, my legs straight; called it The Yoga-Swift. 5y

Vaudeville performer Frances White, 1915. Bloomers! Giant hair bow! Matching chequered fabric on chair and curtains! I love everything about this photo. #knittersofLitsy

I have a special fascination for the intersection of knitting and photography. For while knitting has been around for centuries, it is only in the last 150 years that we have been able to actually photograph someone--a mother, daughter, sister, brother, father, son, or friend--in the meditative act of knitting.
