All Shall Be Well; and All Shall Be Well; and All Manner of Things Shall Be Well
All Shall Be Well; and All Shall Be Well; and All Manner of Things Shall Be Well | Tod Wodicka
3 posts | 1 read | 11 to read
Meet Burt Hecker, aka Eckbert Attquiet, a 63-year-old medieval re-enactor with a momentous nose, who dresses in tunics and drinks too much home-made mead. His treasured wife Kitty has died and their strange and beautiful relationship is now the stuff of history; he has sold all of his possessions and bought a one-way ticket to Europe, bent on rescuing his beloved son Tristan from the 'evil' city of Prague. If only he knew that his son doesn't want to be rescued, or found. This is the story of Burt's painful, hilarious and doomed attempts to come to terms with his own past.

Two very different books about complex father/son relationships for #catsinthecradle

In one, a down-and-out time machine repairman searches for his father who invented time travel and then disappeared.

In the other, a father travels to Prague searching for his son. They became estranged due to the father's devotion to medieval reenactment. He wears, uses, and eats nothing that wasn't available before the year 1200 and is addicted to mead.

Jabberwocky So I need to read both of these 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Jaberwocky How to Live Safely is truly amazing. All Shall Be Well is less so, but still well-written, funny, and sad. 8y

“The schoolroom clock was worn raw by stares; and you couldn't look up at the big Puritanical face of it and not feel the countless years of young eyes reflected in it, urging it onwards. It was a dark, old spirit that didn't so much mark time as bequeath it.”
