The Confessions of X
The Confessions of X | Suzanne M. Wolfe
3 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
Winner of the Christianity Today 2017 Book Award! Before he became a father of the Christian Church, Augustine of Hippo loved a woman whose name has been lost to history. This is her story. She met Augustine in Carthage when she was seventeen. She was the poor daughter of a mosaic-layer; he was a promising student and heir to a fortune. His brilliance and passion intoxicated her, but his social class would be forever beyond her reach. She became his concubine, and by the time he was forced to leave her, she was thirty years old and the mother of his son. And his Confessions show us that he never forgot her. She was the only woman he ever loved. In a society in which classes rarely mingle on equal terms, and an unwed mother can lose her son to the burgeoning career of her ambitious lover, this anonymous woman was a first-hand witness to Augustines anguished spiritual journey from secretive religious cultist to the celebrated Bishop of Hippo. Giving voice to one of historys most mysterious women, The Confessions of X tells the story of Augustine of Hippos nameless lover, their relationship before his famous conversion, and her life after his rise to fame. A tale of womanhood, faith, and class at the end of antiquity, The Confessions of X is more than historical fiction . . . it is a timeless story of love and loss in the shadow of a theological giant.

#MarchUnshelving report:

✅Read 50% physical books from my own shelves
❌Donate 15 books (only got rid of 8)

However, the blue titles with pink on the sides - a total of five books - are in the giveaway box, even if they haven't quite made it out of the house, so that brings me much closer!!

Thanks for the inspiration @Clwojick !!!

Clwojick Way to go! 🤍 5y

mollyrotondo What is Paperback Swap? Something on Litsy? 5y
TheAromaofBooks @mollyrotondo - no, it's a completely separate thing - paperbackswap.com - basically you list books that you are ready to get rid of. If someone requests one, you send it to them free of charge (and you pay the postage). Every time you send a book, you earn a credit. Then you spend your credit requesting other people's books - which they then send to you for free (they pay postage). You're encouraged to send books media mail, which means they ⬇ 5y

TheAromaofBooks @mollyrotondo (cont'd) - only cost about $3 to mail, so basically you are getting books for around $3 each. You can create a wishlist of books you want, and when someone posts it, PBS will send you an email to give you a chance to request it before it's posted on the general website as well. It's a nice way to trade books especially mysteries, romances - trade paperback types. 5y
mollyrotondo @TheAromaofBooks thank you! I feel like I‘ve stumbled onto this at some point but didn‘t know anyone who used it who could recommend it. Nice way to #unshelf though. I will look more into it! 5y
TheAromaofBooks @mollyrotondo - it isn't a great way to get super new, popular books, but I read a lot of older cozy mysteries, or random Nora Roberts romance, things like that, and can almost always find them. I keep a wishlist of random books I'd like to have and have been amazed at the fact that sometimes I have gotten really nice hardcover books, too! 5y
