The Granny
The Granny | Brendan O'Carroll

The final book in the Agnes Browne trilogy. At forty-seven years of age Agnes, now thirteen years happily widowed, enters the 1980s with a fruit stall in Moore Street, a French lover and six children, five of them in their twenties. Becoming a grandmother is a terrible shock to her system, especially as Agnes suffers every one of her daughter-in-law's labour pains! And as the family expands so do the problems -one son's inevitable brush with the law, the heartbreak of emigration. But Agnes Browne is nothing if not a fighter, and she squares her shoulders, offers up a quick one to her departed pal, Marion, and sets about getting things back on an even keel - or as even as things ever get in the Brown household! The same quick-fire dialogue, hilarious humour and great characterisation as in Brendan's bestselling The Mammy, filmed as Agnes Browne by Angelica Huston, and the BAFTA-winning TV series Mrs Browns Boys.

I loved getting to know Dermot and Buster in this one. I laughed a little less in this story and cried a whole lot more, especially at the end. It took me a few minutes after I finished to manage to stop crying, I‘d just fallen in love with Agnes and her boys. Brendan O‘Carroll can really bring characters to life and make you love them, flaws and all.

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie that‘s the perfect word for this writing. I had to watch the ridiculous, not at all the books, just to cheer up. I used to be able to say I wasn‘t a crier. I‘m not sure I can anymore. This whole series is wonderful, and just amazingly written. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics the only series I ever liked 💚😅 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie oh wow, really? It‘s a really loveable, heartwarming series. I just realised that someone dies in every book, but somehow those other deaths aren‘t as hard to take as Agnes‘s. 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I teared up at Frankie‘s. I think it was sort of avoided in the first book. I love that she came back for Agnes, though in the third one. O‘Carroll still managed to make that funny, she‘d just come from lunch with Elvis. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I am not a fan of series at all 😬😅 but this one- gah I just love it. 4y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie this one just sucks you in. 4y

GarthRanzz I am totally enjoying these! Are you going to read The Wan? And you definitely have to find the series! 7y
lauralovesbooks1 @GarthRanzz I read The Wan and adored it! Need to find the show now. 7y
Libby1 @lauralovesbooks1 - the series is on the BBC in the UK. It is ridiculously funny and cheesy, and certainly for a mature audience! 7y
