Rat Girl
Rat Girl: A Memoir | Kristin Hersh
The founder of a cult rock band shares her outrageous tale of growing up much faster than planned. In 1985, Kristin Hersh was just starting to find her place in the world. After leaving home at the age of fifteen, the precocious child of unconventional hippies had enrolled in college while her band, Throwing Muses, was getting off the ground amid rumors of a major label deal. Then everything changed: she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and found herself in an emotional tailspin; she started medication, but then discovered she was pregnant. An intensely personal and moving account of that pivotal year, Rat Girl is sure to be greeted eagerly by Hersh's many fans.

Book 4 of the #24in48 #readathon. Kristin Hersh is the lead singer/songwriter/guitarist of one of my favorite bands, Throwing Muses. This memoir, written from a diary she kept when she was 18, recounts the year in her life when her band recorded their first album, she is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, her surprise pregnancy, and how she tries to manage it all along the way.

Weaponxgirl I really want to get my hands on this baby! 8y

I'm making the same face behind this #bookface. I make this face a lot actually.

@RealLifeReading

vivastory Haha. I'm not exactly sure what that face is. Fear? Consternation? A mixture? 8y
readordierachel @vivastory Definitely a mix, with a healthy dose of awkward. I kinda think of it as " What-am-I-even-doing-here" face or " I-hope-nobody-saw-that" face. 8y
vivastory @ReadOrDieRachel Haha. Oh, I definitely have a "I-hope-nobody-saw-that" face. It's probably my normal face. 8y

Also, shoutout to Kim Gordon's Girl in a Band, which I remembered after creating this collage.

It's #FunFridayPhoto time! Today's photo: favorite memoirs. "RAT GIRL is one of the most honest, gutting, wonderful books I've ever read. When Hersh was eighteen, she 1) Started a band, 2) Found out she was pregnant, & 3) Was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This memoir is a stunning account of how she lived through all three things. If everyone was this coherent and self-aware as a teenager, the world would be a very different place." - @Liberty

BookishTrish I'm with you. Rat Girl is raw and moving and inspired 8y
