Faith, the role of women in the Catholic Church, and secret sorrows. Also, what could be the mysterious connection between a woman in 15th century France and a woman in contemporary Alberta? This elegant, meditative novel gave me a lot to think about, as you can see by all of the pages that I have flagged. I look forward to discussing it with my Two Bichons book group tonight.

Every chapter in this book has an epigraph. Each one has a little weevil too, until something gets resolved.

I listened to the music and to Soeur Luci alternately humming along with the melody or pum-pumming with the bass, occasionally interrupting herself to talk to her creations, chatting away to the sauce —"How you spit! Is it too hot for you? Let me fix that." Then chiding the mushrooms for sogginess —"Mes jolis, you swim like fish!"

Images of Saint Lucien are easily confused with those of Saint Denis, since they both wear their heads in their hands. They belong to the company of cephalophores. The headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow, the West's most famous representative, is the only other cephalophore I know.

The trees were bare and the wind brisk. Overhead, geese were having a leadership crisis. They couldn't find their instinctive V. They formed a W—double V in French of course. Proceeding with much honking and other goosely deliberations, even the geese couldn't fall in and find their place. Not surprising that I felt so out of sync.

[in 15th century France] lesser nobility improved their status through service to the king or by buying up feoffs that fell vacant thanks to casualties of famine, the Black Death, debt and battle.

Set partly in contemporary western Canada and partly in medieval France, and features a bearded female Saint Wilgeforte. In this case, I've solved the problem of books I own sitting unread on my #tbr shelf while I read library books and book club titles instead: my Two Bichons club has added this to our 2017 roster in our #localauthors project. #CanLit 🇨🇦

The 'local author' sticker caught my eye when I was in my local indie bookstore, ordering a copy of Ongoingness to give as a gift and buying a copy of Pilgrimage before my book club discussion next week. I read a library copy, but the author is coming to our meeting so I thought it would be good manners to buy her book. Anyway, I came home with an additional book (pictured) that opens with the bearded female St Wilgeforte. 😊
