When a friend comes to her with a problem, Tish springs into actionno matter how much trouble its going to cause In the title tale of this collection by Mary Roberts Rinehart, after a long, chaotic life, Tish Carberry retires to her apartment, hoping for a bit of peace and quiet. But why, her friends wonder, does it sound like someones practicing riflery in her living room? No one would be surprised if Tish had converted her parlor into a shooting gallery, but her friends suspect something far more sinister: She may be playing golf. Tish took an interest in the game last summer when she met a befuddled young man whose beloved was too preoccupied with the sport to even glance in his direction. Soon afterward, a mysterious old woman appeared to challenge the girland since then, Tish has never been quite the same. Here are five of Rineharts famous Tish storiesrollicking tales of madcap humor starring one of the most fascinating older women in literary history.

Ah, Tish and her madcap schemes! Tish is sort of the American Lucia, though less invested in social climbing and more on the adventurous side. She's usually oblivious to what's really going on, and her Rube Goldberg machinations end up pretty much as you'd expect - disasters, but spectacular disasters.

Aimeesue A little bit of Tish goes a long way, and like Wodehouse and Christie, the stories are much of a muchness- same basic structure, thin supporting characters, situational comedy. Taken one at a time, though, they're great fun. As long as you're not a bootlegger. 😁 6y
CindyMyLifeIsLit I love Tish!! I have several of her books. 6y
LeahBergen Ohhh! I‘ve never heard of these but they sound like something I would love! 6y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen She's nowhere near as good as Benson, but they're a good bit of fun between heavier books. 6y
Aimeesue @CindyMyLifeIsLit Honestly, I'd have to smack her if I were friends with her. I don't know how Lizzie and Aggie put up with her shenanigans! 6y

If you're in the mood for some lighthearted vintage ladies detective fiction, this one is $1.99 today. It's part of a series (about Tish, Agnes, and Lizzie, three middle aged women who get into scrapes and have adventures), but with these you can really start anywhere. I absolutely love the covers that Mysterious Press has come up with for these.

Bookdodger OMG!!! A fellow Tish lover!!! She has been a favorite of mine for 40 years! Mary Roberts Rinehart was no bashful flower either. What an amazing woman. 7y
