Emperor of Ocean Park | Stephen L Carter
9 posts | 12 read | 6 to read
In his triumphant fictional debut, Stephen Carter combines a large-scale, riveting novel of suspense with the saga of a unique family. The Emperor of Ocean Park is set in two privileged worlds: the upper crust African American society of the Eastern seabord families who summer at Martha s Vineyard and the inner circle of an Ivy League law school. Talcott Garland is a successful law professor, devoted father, and husband of a beautiful and ambitious woman, whose future desires may threaten the family he holds so dear. When Talcott s father, Judge Oliver Garland, a disgraced former Supreme Court nominee, is found dead under suspicioius circumstances, Talcott wonders if he may have been murdered. Guided by the elements of a mysterious puzzle that his father left, Talcott must risk his marriage, his career and even his life in his quest for justice. Superbly written and filled with memorable characters, The Emperor of Ocean Park is both a stunning literary achievement and a grand literary entertainment."

Bailedbailed

Can't believe I made it to the halfway point because this book is just so bloated and overwritten. 50 percent through and the majority of it is not about the central mystery.

Thank you so much @annkuch13 ! I am super excited about the books - I have had two of them on my wishlist forever and the third one that I tagged sounds like it is right up my alley. The bookmark is beautiful and you should have heard me scream when I unwrapped the koozie! It's perfect and I will absolutely use it every day! Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and thanks to @BookishMarginalia for organizing this! #summersantagoespostal

This was a great mystery/thriller with cool intersections of university politics and Washington politics. Carter also openly discusses race and how it intersects with these. The twists in the mystery genuinely surprised me. The plot is cleverly composed. Carter creates a great moody atmosphere the keeps you engaged for the entire novel!

This is turning out to be quite the page turner. At least when the cats let me actually see the pages...
