This graphic novel tackles very heavy subject matter with more lightness than it warrants. I‘d recommend it to fans of Alan Gratz‘s Refugee looking for a fast paced survival story set against a historical background.

I‘ve been listening to audiobooks so I can be productive elsewhere, and I listen in the car and walking as well. Slowly making my way through the I Survived series! I love when the author talks at the end about her sources and how she connected with each historical event.
@TheAromaofBooks I had to make some adjustments to my #bookspinbingo grid-had started then rejected several books 😳🧐🤓

TheAromaofBooks haha you can do whatever works best for you - but I also consider DNFs to be checkmarks if it means the book is off your list!! 4y

A difficult topic for most adults to read about, Tarshis addresses the Nazi invasion in Poland tactfully with the story of Max and Zena. Max sneaks out of the ghetto fence to get raspberries and are then chased into the forest, finding Jewish partisan fighters who were blowing up Nazi supply trains. A light read for a heavy subject. This quote is everything, though.

My coworkers son has the collection of "I Survived" so I of course needed to borrow them ??

mskbp I survived the Titanic is my fave! I‘m always borrowing books from my school library over the weekends :) 7y
TheQuietQuill I REALLY want to read that one! My coworkers son only had these three and I found myself reading all of them in one sitting. They are so educational and really makes you wonder what you would have done in that sort of situation! @mskbp 7y
mskbp There are so many good children‘s and YA books out now. I wish I had had a selection like that, but as I‘m an elementary school teacher, I get to browse the library whenever I want to! Another good series is the who was biography series. 7y
TheQuietQuill @mskbp that's awesome! I'll definitely have to check that out 😉 7y

This HF is part of the ‘I Survived‘ New York Times best selling series. This story is about Max and his sister Zena who try desparately to escape the Nazi‘s and get away like their father was unable to. Best as an IR, this story is a good kid-friendly way to introduce students to events that happened in history. #ucflae3414f17

MorganH www.laurentarshis.com/teaching-resources takes you to the author and editor‘s website that includes an educator‘s guide, and a list of the ‘I Survived‘ novels, each including comprehension checks, a novel guide, and quiz! Using this website would align with EL 6 ‘Continually monitor students‘ comprehension.‘ UDL 3.1 ‘Activate or supply background knowledge‘ would be a great use to start learning about important historical events. 7y

I Survived the Nazi Invasion, 1944 by Lauren Tarshis is a Historical Fiction book about Max and his Sister Zena who try to survive and not being taken by the Nazis like their father did. This book is great to learn about the holocaust and introduce Hitler's Nazi troops. This Novel can be introduced to Students from middle school as a read aloud due to the audio tape. Students can follow along while the tape is playing during class. #UCFWalterslit

Erica.rivera This is a website that you can purchase the audio book of any of the I Survived books and some of the background knowledge of why the author wrote this book. http://www.laurentarshis.com/i-survived/9-i-survived-nazi-invasion-1944 (edited) 7y
Brookegamble @Erica.rivera I really enjoyed this book and think this series is a must for middle schoolers! After just reading one, I became obsessed with going through all the different topics. This series is a great way for students to better understand these historic events in a more relatable way. #UCFWaltersLit 7y

Erica.rivera @brookegamble I just got done reading this book and it was really good. It's interesting how you found a website that gives off information about the book and activities that has a better understanding for the students. Very eye opening book. Great choice! (edited) 7y
