I Have No Secrets | Penny Joelson
11 posts | 8 read | 17 to read
Jemma knows who did the murder. She knows because he told her. And she can't tell anyone. Fourteen-year-old Jemma has severe cerebral palsy. Unable to communicate or move, she relies on her family and carer for everything. She has a sharp brain and inquisitive nature, and knows all sorts of things about everyone. But when she is confronted with this terrible secret, she is utterly powerless to do anything. Though that might be about to change... A page-turning thriller seen through the eyes of a unique narrator, this is a truly original, heart-rending and compulsive book for young adult readers. Perfect for fans of Wonder, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and Looking for JJ. Penny Joelson began working with disabled people when she was a teenager, which gave her the inspiration and insight for this book. She teaches creative writing and lives in London with her family. One book down for #24b4monday! I started this book before I had my son, and had somehow forgotten all about it, until I found it in my car. The narrator, Jemma, has severe CP and cannot communicate. Her aide's slimy bf confesses to her that he had killed someone that was missing in her neighborhood! Shortly after that, her aide disappears. The representation in this book was great. I loved that Jemma got to be a full person, 🔽

rjsthumbelina ...despite the fact that she couldn't talk. And her family dynamics were really well done, too. We don't often hear about foster families for kids with disabilities. This wasn't the best right at the beginning, but by the middle I was definitely hooked! 4y

For once, I'm actually off work for a while #24b4monday #readathon! I am spending the next 3 days at home with my almost 3 month old, so who knows how much reading I will actually get done! First up are the tagged book in print, Punching the Air in ebook format, and You Had Me at Hola and Midnight in Chernobyl on audio! Bare minimum I'd like to get through 2 print books, 2 ebooks, 1 graphic novel, and 1 audiobook before Monday 👍👍

Andrew65 Great to have you with us, good luck. 😊👍 4y

I asked Delilah to help me pick out a new book to read. She put her nose on this one several times so I think her choice was clear. Also, I am pretty sure she has a lot of secrets. Do not be deceived by that innocent face!

What are you reading right now?

rachelsbrittain Absolutely precious! I'm reading A Princess in Theory, Docile, and Autonomous 5y

Jemma has cerebral palsy and can‘t move or speak. A murderer confesses to her and feels threatened when she begins to explore options for communication. The book deals with disability, long-term foster care, birth siblings, and more. Well done, Ms. Joelson!

Jemma has cerebral palsy and is unable to move or speak. Because of this, people around her tend to let their secrets out. But there is one secret she desperately needs to tell: she knows who the murderer is because they told her. A new technology is being created that will hopefully let Jemma communicate but will the murderer try and stop her?

The book does have a mystery element to it but it offers so much more than a cheap thrill.

SailorMoon Thanks for playing!!! 🥰🌙 and yes, HP ❤ 6y
Susanita I loved the movie Fantastic Mr. Fox, and I‘m not a big Wes Anderson fan. Maybe it was the company, since I saw it with a group of friends. 6y
emilyrose_x @Susanita Maybe 💁‍♀️ I can't remember who I saw it with 😂 6y
