*This novella originally appeared in Daughters of A Nation: A Black Suffragette Historical Romance Anthology* Harlem, 1917 After spending half her life pretending to be something she's not, performance is second nature for cabaret owner Bertha Hines. With the election drawing near and women's voting rights on the ballot, Bertha decides to use her persuasive skills to push the men of New York City in the right direction. Chef Amir Chowdhury jumped ship in New York to get a taste of the American Dream, only to discover he's an unwanted ingredient. When ornery Amir reluctantly takes a job at The Cashmere, he thinks he's hit the bottom of the barrel; however, working at the club reignites his dream of being a force for change. His boss, Bertha, ignites something else in him. Bertha and Amir clash from the start, but her knowledge of politics and his knowledge of dance force them into a detente that fans the flames of latent desire. But Bertha has the vice squad on her tail, and news from home may end Amir's dream before it comes to fruition. With their pasts and futures stacked against them, can Amir and Bertha hold on to their growing love?

1917 and suffragettes are working to get women the vote. Bertha, a cabaret owner in Harlem, is a part of the movement even when others don‘t want her there. She‘s smart, strong and independent.

Amir is not legally in the US, but works for Bertha. As the two work together they become close. He‘s sweet and makes mistakes, but apologizes and respects who Bertha is.

I loved this novella. It‘s romance and a history lesson in a great book.

I love how this romance skillfully addresses race, women's rights, and voting rights in 1917 Harlem.

This book! During the cusp of the Harlem Renaissance a juke joint owner is fighting to grant women the right to vote. Then she meets a Bengali-Muslim chef who begins to cook at her spot. Together they dance, fight the man, and fall in love. And isn't that what we all really want??

A peek inside the Holiday 2017 #EverAfterBox. Very awesome presentation, set up sort of like an advent calendar. There‘s one gift bag for each day of the first 24 days of the month. Each bag contains a little gift from a different author and some include cards with info on downloading an ebook (the tagged book was included as a download). I may have opened them all already 😉 Also includes a special bookish gift and a Christmas themed paperback.
