"We make so much of lettercraft literal, don't we? Whacked seals aside. Letters as time travel, time-traveling letters. Hidden meanings. I wonder what you see me saying here."

I know her. And her parents, her coach, her club. The intensity of youth sports portrayed here is real.
"Suddenly Americans feel self-conscious of their white identity and this self-consciousness misleads them into thinking their identity is under threat. In feeling wrong, they feel wronged. In being asked to be made aware of racial oppression, they feel oppressed."
I was not very familiar with the Yugoslav wars prior this reading. To learn about the experience through the perspective of a young girl was all the more sobering.
Lovely... although I feel that I would have enjoyed this more when I was younger. 🤷♀️
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and understand why it's so well renowned. The stories of each mother and daughter felt so real and were beautifully relayed.
It was a very manga Sunday. 🗡️
Then & Now: How sufficient and how lacking are social services for children?
Fitting read for the one year quarantineversary. 😷🕯️
"Our nation‘s core narrative can be summed up in the disconnect between the Constitution‘s pledge of equality and the rampant disregard for that ambition that has plagued the United States of America ever since."
"...the most abusive parts of our nation obsessively neglect yesterday while peddling in possibility. I remembered that we got here by refusing to honestly remember together. I remembered that it was easier to promise than it was to reckon or change."
If this book were a movie, it would be directed by Jordan Peele.
Cute and fun Valentine's Day read! (Though not as much romance as I, for some reason, thought there might be.)
"If people were given the choice between democracy and whiteness, how many would choose whiteness? "
...I guess we found out on January 6, 2021
When I found out that Jerry from my favorite SF bookstore edited this collection, I had to pick it up. Did not disappoint!
"Stories are powerful, but gather too many of the words of others in your heart, and they will drown out your own. Remember that."
Promising male swimmer accused of rape... But a novel.

I couldn't resist picking this series back up in light of recent news about the Russian mega-hack of U.S. Federal agencies. The world of espionage is scary and fascinating!
Having fun reading this manga and watching the anime with my partner.
Holly Jolly THANK YOU @StaceGhost for the wonderful #jolabokaflodswap goodies! I can't wait to start this book and try this chocolate, which smells incredible. The tea and cute ornament are truly the icing on top. 🎄📚🍫🎁🤩
Thanks again for organizing, @MaleficentBookDragon 🎅
Thanks, Obama! What a fascinating look into the inner workings of the highest office. This book is an education.
My favorite quote:
"Awareness of custom and ritual mattered. Symbols and protocol mattered. Body language mattered. I worked on my salute."
Look who just found a spot under the tree! 🤩🎅🎄

"Do you feel ever more distant from the world? Or has the world, in its new extremity, finally come to you?"
For me, the pandemic has brought out both sentiments. Zadie Smith has captured the experience impeccably. This may be my favorite read of 2020.

Lovely may be one of my new favorite characters in literature. As a former teacher of English for speakers of other languages, I particularly ardor and recognize Lovely's voice; spot on with the hyper-use of progressive tense!
"We try to squeeze a little more life out of our lives. It's natural to want to do that. But to be alive in the world, every day, as we are given more and more and more, as the nature of 'what we can handle' changes and our methods for how we handle it change, too, that's something of a miracle."
What a fun and enlightening astrology starter set! Learned much more about my sun, moon, and rising signs. Super affirming! ♍☀️🌙🌅
Kamala gets out the vote and defends democracy. 🦸🏽♀️

Perfect Halloweekend #manga 👹
#hallowreads #spooktober
"...The place where everything seen and unseen met up and danced. Present, past, and future, all at once. We who are living, and spirits of the dead. It‘s all right there swirling around together in that mystical in-between time.”

"She was a witch, and she thought the word was a marvelous one, with connotations of knowledge and power and independence."

Another amazing collection of #amazonoriginalstories ♀️ Talk about an all-star lineup of authors! Each story explores a woman acting in defiance of the expectations placed upon her. 🏋️♀️
This story is picking up pace and each one ends with such a cliffhanger! That's how they get you with #manga huh?
I thought I saw where this story* was going but the twist caught me by surprise! This was my first TJR and I'm looking forward to reading her novels on my TBR.
*Free on Kindle and Audible with Amazon Prime
I love Mindy and I love #amazonoriginalstories which are free on Kindle and Audible with Amazon Prime 🙌
This series is fun, heartfelt, and relatable - just like the writer herself!
"You can escape a town, but you cannot escape blood. Somehow, the Vignes twins believed themselves capable of both."
Ferrante is the queen of symbolism, portrayals of inner turmoil, and the complexities of female relationships. Another absorbing triumph.

My first #manga 🙌 After getting accustomed to reading from right to left, I had a blast with every moment of this endearing spy comedy. Highly recommend!
The book is so much better than the movie. I love how she's a synesthete! The author's CIA background makes this an even more fascinating peek into the intelligence gathering world.
"The careful development of thrift, patience, high morals, and good manners. In short, how to get rid of the funkiness. The dreadful funkiness of passion, the funkiness of nature, the funkiness of the wide range of human emotions."
Read this during the Democratic National Convention. 😎 Such fun! Buckle up, people. It's almost time to #VOTE ☑️
Recommend both reading the book and watching the HBO docu-series. The Golden State Killer now has a name, face, and hefty sentence, in part thanks to Michelle's dedication to the case.
"One can only go for so long without asking who am I? Where do I come from? What does all this mean? What is being? What came before me, and what might come after? Without answers, there is only a hole, a hole where a history should be that takes the shape of an endless longing. We are cavities."
Enjoyed this cute and fun modern romance that also addresses the risks and consequences of CTE in football players.
