Brother of Sleep: A Novel
Brother of Sleep: A Novel | Robert Schneider
3 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
Could the greatest musician of all time live his life in a remote peasant village and never be discovered by the world? Set against the backdrop of an Alpine village in the nineteenth century, this astounding novel tells the story of Elias Johannes Alder, a musical genius with supernatural hearing who develops his talent in secret midnight sessions at the church organ. A spiritual descendant of Patrick Suskinds Perfume and translated into twenty-four languages, Brother of Sleep moves inexorably toward tragedy as Elias is undone by his intense feeling for Elsbeth, the woman he loves. In this shocking and beguiling novel, Robert Schneider has created a world that is utterly seductive and wholly original.

Mehso-so

Elias is a musical genius born into a family of Austrian mountain farmers in the early 1800s who falls in love with his cousin, thus decides not to pursue a career in music. His love is unrequited&then there‘s her brother. Some descriptions were disgusting&cruelty to animals&violence(a woman is beaten&burned& there are many fires that destroy homes &kill children) hard to read but it‘s a well written, weird & unusual story.Did I enjoy it? Not really.

I was going to the Uni Library to get new books for my Thesis and found a bookshop sale in front. Ended up with these two books, adding yet again to my never ending pile of unread books🙈

Schlafes Bruder I remember from school; my german professor recommended it and I never got a chance to read it, until now and Helmut Qualtinger was brilliant, so this play probably is as well😊

MayJasper Those magical words * bookshop sale* 😍 6y
ju.ca.no @MayJasper my nemesis😂😂 but I‘m proud of myself- at first I had much more books and then managed to buy „only“ 2😁 6y
MayJasper Noble and brave actions indeed. Proud of you 😂 6y

Pickpick

I had no idea what to expect when a friend pressed this on me but it turned out to be unexpectedly captivating. This odd tale of an undiscovered musical genius living a tortured existence in a remote 19th C. German village is a weird mix of the dark and twisty and the darkly comic and is also at times strangely beautiful. Something about the mood (and maybe the weirdness) reminded me of Guy Maddin‘s indie pic The Saddest Music in the World. 💕🎶

KVanRead This cover though...😳 Not the one on my friend‘s copy thank goodness...this is from the Goodreads entry. 7y
