Everywoman: One Womans Truth About Speaking the Truth | Jess Phillips
10 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
'Joyfully candid and very funny.' Guardian 'Jess Phillips knows the truth . . . and here she shows how scary and sad as well as joyful and liberating the answers can be.' Damian Barr 'Everywoman has all the laughs [of Lena Dunham and Caitlin Moran] with a backbone of real glinting anger . . .there were so many funny and wise things on each page that whittling them down into a review seemed impossible.' Julie Birchill, Spectator 'As fresh as mountain air amid the Westminster tumbleweed.' Metro 'Arresting.' Observer If youre thinking, Jess, who? then Im glad that there was something about Everywoman and truth that caught your eye. Or you might already know me as that gobby MP who has a tendency to shout about the stuff I care about. Because Im a woman with a cause, I have been called a feminazi witch, a murderer and threatened with rape. The internet attracts a classy crowd. So, speaking the truth isnt always easy but I believe its worth it. And I want you to believe it too. The truth can be empowering, the truth can lead to greater equality, and the world would be incredibly boring if we let all of those people who allegedly know everything, say everything. By demanding to be heard, by dealing with our imposter syndrome, by being cheerleaders, doers not sayers, creating our own networks and by daring to believe that we can make a difference, we can. Were women and were kick-ass. And thats the truth.

Mehso-so

Undecided. I see what she wanted to tell, and it's really worthwhile. I felt she rallied against everything and thus seems overly angry.
I didn't find it as funny (see cover review) as Caitlin Moran, or as wise as Lena Dunham.
But interesting facts about women in parliament, about the terrifying anti woman statistics and imbalances.
I'm recommending it to my 21 year old daughter.

Starting the new year as ever with a selection of essays or letters.
This was a gift from a good friend with whom I share many political opinions. He's going to read it after me...

I‘m overjoyed to have got tickets for Jess Phillips‘ talk in Birmingham as part of the Literature Festival. She was absolutely brilliant in conversation with Caitlin Moran back in July. I really like her attitude towards underprivileged people and how she truly stands up for what she believes in. She is truly inspirational.

#7days7covers #CoverCrush #day7

Seven covers in seven days with no explanation and tag someone new every day. What a cool idea!

Tagging every man and everywoman (see what I did there) who wishes to take part. I‘ve really enjoyed doing this challenge, putting together collages and struggling to say nothing about the covers I‘ve chosen, so I‘m sure you will too!

This is an excellent read so far! I saw Jess Philips a couple of weeks ago on stage with Caitlin Moran and both were absolutely hilarious. I wish I‘d known of her sooner!

[featuring tea and fluffy socks, obviously]

This is intense but amazing, another one of those must-read commentaries on our culture which opens up a whole new (or expanded) way of seeing things. Jess Phillips, an MP who has been through most of the crap, discusses trolling, motherhood, women in parliament, and so much more. Definitely one to pass on and recommend to others.

An AMAZING book. Uplifting, easy to read, witty, and poignant. What a woman! I can't recommend this enough! I only wish I was able to vote for her. A must-read for those of us women who have been trolled and silenced.
