These are the books I've read so far in lockdown (although technically two if them I had already started). I would recommend all of them although I consider to struggle with Baldwin's writing. I find his work really impactful but it takes me so long to read. #noraephron #jamesbaldwin #ottessamoshfegh #harukimurakami #chimamandangoziadichie #yaagyasi

If you're a book lover and you've never been to Hay you really must go. Sad that for me the festival is over for another year but had a lovely few days reading and hearing about books in a beautiful setting.

Sad that Hay festival is over for another year. As always I've been to some brilliant talks, but have been uncharacteristically reserved in my book buying.

Mehso-so

I was uncertain about this book to begin with and still cant quite decide if I would designate it so-so or a pick. I found it quite emotionally comforting how it confronts issues relating to mortality and the style is certainly innovative. It's not something I'd ever pick normally but we read it with my book club and I was pleased I'd branched out #lincoln #lincolninthebardo

Milkman | Anna Burns

Pickpick

Burns' descriptions of male control had a huge emotional impact on me and resonated deeply. I've never heard or read such an accurate description of the subtle ways women can be made to feel vulnerable by predatory men. It's a difficult read stylistically and takes some perseverance to begin with but is well worth the effort #AnnaBurns #Milkman #patriarchy #ireland #troubles #violence #control

BiblioLitten Great review. Also, I should persevere and not give up reading it. 🙂 5y

One member of my book club said 'the racism got in the way of the plot', a comment which made me somewhat uncomfortable. It was a well written, human book and has launched me into somewhat of an obsession with Baldwin. However, I found the ending unsatisfying and I wish it had been longer with more chance to explore the characters #IfBealeStreetCouldTalk #JamesBaldwin #racism #bookclub

The Break | Marian Keyes
post image
Pickpick

This isn't the sort of thing I usually go for but I was looking for an easy read novel to go alongside reading the very heavy This Changes Everything and Marian Keyes kept being utterly charming on my favourite podcasts so I thought I'd give her new book a shot. I couldn't put it down it was completely absorbing and Keyes writes love, sex and relationships so well. A heartwrenching and enjoyable read #mariankeyes #thebreak #sex #irish #love

So I LOVED this book. I could hardly put it down and it was such a therapeutic read. It's a fascinating insight into the darker side of fame and there are some heartwrenching moments. I would definitely recommend even if you're not a Lily Allen fan #lilyallen #mythoughtsexactly #popstar #music #memoir #autobiography

This has only just come out and I'd decided to put off buying it because of its hefty price tag of £20. But then I saw it for £9 on my local supermarket and decided it was just meant to be. I'm loving it so far and finding Lily Allen's honesty and vulnerability refreshing #lilyallen #mythoughtsexactly #memoir #autobiography #celebrity

I found this such a cathartic read and I love this quote from the book which to me sums up her refreshingly non-judgemental approach to discussing food. This book feels like the antidote to the mixed and often toxic messages we receive about food from society and from each other. I can't recommend it enough #eatup #food #recipes #rubytandoh #greatbritishbakeoff

I took a trip to Daunt Books and after so many people recommending her work I finally bought some Angela Carter. I thought I'd start with her most famous work and I also liked the idea of short stories because the other book I'm reading at the moment is quite heavy. I'll let you know what I think! #thebloodychamber #angelacarter #dauntbooks #london

The latest standard issue introduced me to this. I'm intrigued to read it and the discussion around coercive control is so important, particularly as too often we only discuss physical manifestations of domestic violence. Listening to this certainly made me reevaluate past relationships and is a step in the right direction in removing the shame felt by victims #coercivecontrol #domesticviolence #standardissue #podcast
