That Thing We Call a Heart | Sheba Karim
10 posts | 4 read | 20 to read
This young adult novel by Sheba Karim, author of Skunk Girl, is a funny and affecting coming-of-age story for fans of Jenny Han, Megan McCafferty, and Sara Farizan. Shabnam Qureshi is facing a summer of loneliness and boredom until she meets Jamie, who scores her a job at his aunts pie shack. Shabnam quickly finds herself in love, while her former best friend, Farah, who Shabnam has begun to reconnect with, finds Jamie worrying. In her quest to figure out who she really is and what she really wants, Shabnam looks for help in an unexpected placeher family, and her fathers beloved Urdu poetry. That Thing We Call a Heart is a funny and fresh story about the importance of lovein all its forms.

One of the most powerful last words in a YA novel. I love this to bits. 💕

Guys, I'm literally dying inside. ?? I'm just on page 70 of That Thing We Call A Heart and already I ship Jamie and Shabnam! Eee, the way they nickname each other "pie wallahs" and Jamie telling Shabnam that she's the prettiest pie wallah in a hundred thousand miles. *swoon* ?

"One million people died during Partition-muslims and Hindus and Sikhs-and each one of them has a story," Mr. Blake continued. "Imagine your family's lived in a town for generations, and then one day you're told, sorry, you're not no longer welcome here. We talk about birth, death and division for nations, but we so often forget the human toll behind political maneuvers. We still forget them." Etc.

I found this very important.

I finished We Come Apart this morning, took me less then a day to read it was so beautiful! Also it was set in poem form so there weren't many words on the pages. My full review is on my Goodreads and Bookstagram account if you want to check it out.

New book: That Thing We Call A Heart by Sheba Karim. ❤️

Post I want to write for @bookriot requires your help. In the book I'm reading, the main character is obsessed with Radiohead. What other YA books feature main characters who are fanatic about a real band?

CoffeeK8 I know in Eleanor & Park they make each other mix tapes from real bands but I can't remember if it was one specific one. 7y
CoffeeK8 Also, there's the Dolly Parton obsession in 7y
Shay I read a great one where the protagonist is obsessed with Patti Smith. 7y
Kelly @Shay @CoffeeK8 thanks guys!! 7y
