Jackie's Girl
Jackie's Girl: My Life with the Kennedy Family | Kathy McKeon
An endearing coming-of-age memoir by a young woman who spent thirteen years as Jackie Kennedys personal assistant and occasional nannyand the lessons about life and love she learned from the glamorous first lady. In 1964, Kathy McKeon was just nineteen years old and newly arrived from Ireland when she was hired as the personal assistant to former first lady Jackie Kennedy. The next thirteen years of her life were spent in Jackie's service, during which Kathy not only played a crucial role in raising young Caroline and John Jr., but also had a front-row seat to some of the twentieth centurys most significant events. Because Kathy was always at Jackies side, Rose Kennedy deemed her Jackies girl. And although Kathy called Jackie Madam, she considered her employer more like a big sister who, in many ways, mentored her on how to be a lady. Kathy was there during Jackie and Aristotle Onassiss courtship and marriage and Robert Kennedys assassination, dutifully supporting Jackie and the children during these tumultuous times in history. A rare and engrossing look at the private life of one of the most famous women of the twentieth century, Jackies Girl is also a moving personal story of a young woman finding her identity and footing in a new country, along with the help of the most elegant woman in America.

This was a pretty good memoir. An interesting look into the life of a governess for Mrs. Kennedy Onassis that began less than a year after the assassination of JFK.

Kathy McKeon moved to the United States all the way from Ireland, and who would have imagined her first job would be working as Jackie Kennedy‘s assistant?

Loved the stories of Kathy‘s life back home in Ireland almost as much as her funny stories involving Jackie‘s family.

A fantastic memoir for fans of the Kennedys (like me!) or anyone who enjoys coming of age memoirs.

I had to stop reading. If I share why, it will not sound nice and its not necessary to be said. I am at a different place in my life now and I am very selective. The subject IS very interesting though.

(Are they searching for the diamond in her ring? 😳)

BarbaraBB Now I am so curious about what you won‘t say 😀😉 6y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I will say this. Jackie was unemployed at the time and had a Personal Assistant, a Nanny, a Housekeeper, a cook and more. 😳 @BarbaraBB (edited) 6y
Betty @Joyfulmimi I enjoyed the book and read all of it. I'm curious why you stopped reading it. 6y

DrSabrinaMoldenReads Mainly because of my own personal disinterest in that type of lifestyle that Jackie was leading at the time @Betty @BarbaraBB 6y
BarbaraBB @Joyfulmimi I can understand. So unreal and not interesting! 6y
