Long Secret
Long Secret | Louise Fitzhugh
5 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
Who's been writing those strange notes popping up all over town? Notes like, "How sharper than a serpent's tooth is a rotten parent" or "You need more pull to get a rich man into Heaven than to get a camel through the eye of a needle." Harriet the Spy is going to catch the mysterious note leaver if it takes her all summer! It sounds like someone religious, she reasons, like The Preacher, or his fanatical sidekick, Jessie Mae, who brings her Bible to the beach. Harriet's friend Beth Ellen is no help at all - her mother has just returned from seven years in Europe and is driving Beth Ellen crazy. But Harriet's doing fine on her own. And the secret she finally uncovers is going to surprise everyone.

I‘ve wanted to reread THE LONG SECRET ever since I reread HARRIET THE SPY a few years back, and I finally found a copy in a Little Free Library near the park! (The public library discarded it ages ago and the local used market couldn‘t oblige me.) I dove in over a chocolate stout cupcake with salted caramel icing (delish) and a cappuccino (substandard, especially after the awesome one I had earlier this week).

Slajaunie It looks delicious! 2y
xicanti @Slajaunie the icing was especially good. 2y

Pickpick

I read and loved HARRIET THE SPY when I was a kid, and upon reading it again as an adult not too long ago I still very much enjoyed it. But I don't remember reading this book, or the next book, SPORT, when I was younger. This book is more about Harriet's friend Beth Ellen than about Harriet, and I quite enjoyed it.

This book (not this edition — a lovely hardback that was a gift) taught me the cruel lesson not to lend my books. The girl I loaned it to in junior high returned it in a disastrous condition. #cruelsummer #junetunz

Also the source of one of my favorite quotes: "Never be afraid to wear glasses." ?

Smangela 😢😢 I lent one of my BOTM selections out never having read it and it left in perfect condition - I'm praying it returns that way as well 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 8y
Emily92Bibliophile Because of a story similar to this one, I don't lend out books, except to 2 or 3 friends who strictly uphold the keeping of books in good condition and treating books nicely 😞 8y

Ever since I reread Harriet the Spy awhile back I've wanted to read the sequel, which I don't think I read as a kid.

I recently reread this book nearly 40 years since the first time I read it as an 11-year old and it damned sure holds up. In fact, I'm impressed by my 11-year-old self for recognizing its genius and loving it so completely.

Revenge4bess I‘m not sure if I have ever read this 4y
