Thx @TheBookHippie for introducing us to this heart-warming story about family, community, the healing power of nature & the art of making maple syrup. I adored this book & trivia from @Suet624 & @tpixie So cool that the owner of a PA maple farm created a museum to honor this beloved classic. The author‘s son even donated the actual Newbery Award so that kids who visit the museum and have read the book can hold the medal!

I started this middle grade read today, and I think it‘s going to be perfect for December. It‘s been on my shelf a long time, but I‘m just now finally picking it up for the children‘s classic read with @TheBookHippie

📷: Luthien just came in from running in the snow and had a bath. Now, she and La Gata are ready to snuggle in for the evening.

1/2 way through this sweet story. I‘m glad their Dad is healing in the countryside 🦋 🌳 🐭 🌺
There are magic & miracles in nature 💚

Love that it‘s loosely based on the authors‘ own history.
Another touching #ChildrensClassicRead2025

Here‘s another Middle Grade book. This one is about a family who took a leap of faith and left the city (Pittsburgh) to try living on a farm near Edinboro. They were looking for a change because the father had been in the war and a POW camp. They learned about maple sugaring and all the “miracles” that nature held throughout the year. It‘s a heartwarming story published in the 50‘s. #100YEARS100BOOKS #BookSpinBingo #14 #BS #BFC21 #MGMarch

megnews Sounds good! 5y
Allylu It was cool because I live in western PA and we used to take our children to watch folks tap the trees for maple sap and we would get maple sugar candy. 5y
megnews I love reading a book with a local connection 5y
TheAromaofBooks I remember reading this one as a kid, but haven't read it since!! I may have to dig out my copy. 5y

Catching up on long-overdue reviews—I finished this a month ago and loved it. A young girl and her family move to Maple Hill, her grandmother‘s old house, because it‘s thought it would help her father, who hasn‘t been himself since returning from WWII. The book follows a year at Maple Hill, as Marly discovers the simple miracles that surround her. Winner of the 1957 Newbery—it‘s a sweet glimpse into a simpler time, without being saccharine at all.

Not nearly as many hours as I was going for so far... I keep getting distracted by the other member of my household who‘s getting bored with social distancing. 😂 But I finished Chamber of Secrets last night, I got about halfway through Minority Council today, and read just a few chapters of Miracles on Maple Hill tonight. Looking forward to more reading tomorrow, after I “attend” our church service online! #stayhome24in48 #24in48

Another required read from my grade school days. An interesting book with plenty to teach about tapping maple trees for syrup! 🍁 It is also a useful tool for discussing various life lessons: death, the trials of war, avoiding judgement, thinking before speaking, everyday miracles, and living in the moment.

I highly recommend the full cast audio book as a way to absorb this story. It‘d be a lovely way for a family to enjoy this book together.
