Riding Freedom | Pam Munoz Ryan
5 posts | 15 read | 3 to read
A reissue of Pam Munoz Ryan's bestselling backlist with a distinctive new author treatment. In this fast-paced, courageous, and inspiring story, readers adventure with Charlotte Parkhurst as she first finds work as a stable hand, becomes a famous stage-coach driver (performing brave feats and outwitting bandits), finds love as a woman but later resumes her identity as a man after the loss of a baby and the tragic death of her husband, and ultimately settles out west on the farm she'd dreamed of having since childhood. It wasn't until after her death that anyone discovered she was a woman.

This is a charming middle-grade novel based on the true story of a young woman who found freedom in the 19th century by living as a man. It was a very quick audiobook accompaniment to cleaning hummingbird feeders this morning. My son and I both enjoyed it quite a bit.

This great story is based loosely on the true story of Charlotte Parkhurst, a woman who lived in the mid-1800‘s and passed for a man her entire adult life. She drove stagecoach and made her own living in California‘s wild west.

Listening to this I kept thinking, transgender people have always been here. It‘s so far past time that we cis make space for people to live authentically.

This was a summer reading book for my new class. This was a great, quick read about a very brave girl. So much happens to her in this little story that I won‘t divulge anything. No spoilers.
