Munro Maddux has arrived in Brisbane as an exchange student from his home town in Canada. There are two reasons for the trip. One is to fulfil the dream of his little sister, Martel, whose life was cut short by heart failure last year, leaving Martel to deal with his parents' sadness, their forgiveness and their suspicion - since Munro was with his sister when she died and couldn't help her. Escaping to the other side of the the world seemed like a good idea. Munro gets a job at 'Fair Go Community Village', an assisted living facility in an outer suburb. There he gets to know the fascinating cast of young men and women who call Fair Go home. As the months pass, the notion of honouring his sister takes on a new identity for Munro.
