1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die
1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die | Robert Dimery
3 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
Now newly revised, this fascinating book is the ultimate critical guide to history's greatest albums . Freshly revised and updated - and now in its seventh year - 1001 ALBUMS YOU MUST HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE is your essential guide to the best recorded music. You'll find a mouth-watering choice of listening here: from Miles Davis's jazz landmark Kind of Blue (1959) to The White Stripes' triumphant Elephant (2003), alongside groundbreaking releases by contemporary artists. Explore musical history, from the symphonic pop of The Beach Boy's Pet Sounds to the gargantuan grunge of Nirvana's Nevermind. As well as the acknowledged milestones without which no such list would be complete, you'll discover many unexpected treats, such as Einsturzende Neubauten's power tool-enhanced soundscapes, and Aphex Twin's sonic troublemaking. 1001 ALBUMS YOU MUST HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE pays homage to the many forces who have shaped the world of contemporary music and dips into a multitude of genres - incorporating a vast quota of rock and pop, but also slices of jazz, funk, punk, disco, soul, hip-hop, experimental directions, world music, and a wide cross section of dance music. Detailed descriptions of each album are accompanied by fascinating insights and trivia. What album did Time magazine consider the greatest of the 20th Century? Which anthemic Prince song was his attempt to write Bob Seger-style country rock? And what links Count Basie and Batman? Relive Bob Dylan's darkly visionary Highway 61 Revisited, recorded in 1965 in an America at war with itself as well as Vietnam. Skip forward to Johnny Cash's remarkable renaissance in the 1990s and Ali Farka Toure's final masterpiece. From lesser-known cult gems to acknowledged classics, this new edition of 1001 ALBUMS YOU MUST HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE opens up a world of inspirational music for you to discover.

This is an update on a post on #tuesdaytunes post a couple of weeks ago, The local member supported radio station has completed their countdown of the top 909 albums. The initial 899 would be represented by 1 song, but the final top 10 they played last week in their entirety. I caught a little bit while at work but I just looked at the site & found the graphic breakdown on their site fascinating: (CONT)

I checked to see where the albums that I voted for landed & Ziggy Stardust ended at #3 (!), Pixies Doolittle #33. I did't see Miles Davis Round Bout Midnight, but I did see the fantastic Kind of Blue at #16 & the epic Bitches' Brew. This is in an incredible list. So, for my #tuesdaytunes selection this week, I am going to choose 1 song from a few of the top 10 albums that I love.

vivastory Looking at the albums selected for the final 909, I think that you could give it to someone who is wanting to get into music in a big way. A crowd sourced list, with results on par with a big magazine. @tiedyedude (edited) 9mo

Suet624 I have never been a fan of Fleetwood Mac. Shocking, I know. Ziggy, though, I saw in Nashville in the early 70‘s. 9mo
BarbaraBB This is so cool. What a list! I scrolled through and it really is fabulous. Only thing are my Chili Peppers… Californication at 676 and even Blood Sugar Sex Magik at 329 🤷🏻‍♀️ But I agree on Prince, Fleetwood Mac and Nirvana in the Top 10. Also glad to see Lauryn Hill there, I am going to see her later this year. 9mo
Cathythoughts That‘s a real blast from the past Beatles picture ❤️ 9mo
vivastory @Suet624 That is shocking. Landslide is one of my fave songs of all-time. That's so cool you saw Bowie 9mo
vivastory @BarbaraBB That's awesome that you're going to be seeing Lauryn Hill! I was pleased to see her ranked high. The Fugees were a favorite in high school 9mo
TieDyeDude Nice selections. Fun list. Not a lot of surprises, but I didn't expect Jason Isabel in the top 20 9mo
vivastory @TieDyeDude He's a big deal here. I like him, but I have to admit that I don't quite get all of the hype. 9mo

Let‘s ignore the rest of the books I just ordered when I have no space. Why did I choose this one? Do I really need another project? And how many of these albums are available through Spotify? 😁

What albums are on your “must hear” list?

Shadowfat I've gotten a decent number of these from the library but it does take awhile to listen to them! 6y
JackOBotts I doubt this is included on the list, but Toadies “Rubberneck” is one of my all time favorite albums. Sad to say I vent recall the last time I listened to an album all the way through. The way I listen to music has changed so much with digital music. 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
