The Scarab Path
The Scarab Path | Adrian Tchaikovsky
7 posts | 2 read | 8 to read
The war with the Wasp Empire has ended in a bitter stalemate, and Collegium has nothing to show for it but wounded veterans. Cheerwell Maker finds herself crippled in ways no doctor can mend, haunted by ghosts of the past that she cannot appease, seeking for meaning in a city that no longer seems like home. The Empress Seda is regaining control over those imperial cities who refused to bow the knee to her, but she draws her power from something more sinister than mere armies and war machines. Only her consort, the former spymaster Thalric, knows the truth, and now the assassins are coming and he finds his life and his loyalties under threat yet again. Out past the desert of the Nem the ancient city of Khanaphes awaits them both, with a terrible secret entombed beneath its stones...

The Scarab Path might be my favorite in the series after the first book.

Ambassadors from the Beetle Lowlands and the Wasp Empire, now in a tenuous truce after 4 books of war, find themselves in an ancient city far off the maps that holds a dark strange secret in its belly.

The battles and twists were excellent as usual, but I just can‘t say enough about the character work here. So many complex heroes and villains that I have come to love.

This page seems to have more book dust than usual causing my eyes to water... yeah, that‘s the ticket.

“...and you deserve more than that.”

Um, but does he though?

1. Goodreads and Litsy

2. Hmmmm... good one @GarthRanzz I enjoy anything that‘s well done I suppose, but I find that when I‘ve tried my amateurish hand at fiction it tends to be 1st person.

3. I‘ve got a break next week and my wife will be working so it is going to be just me and my 2 little boys all day every day. It is entirely possible that I will not notice.

4. “All are welcome! All welcome!”

Thanks for the tag @Moray_Reads !

Moray_Reads I think not noticing is the goal 😉 6y
laurieluna Yep, sure my two will keep me just as busy! Have a good break with your boys 😊 6y

If I am absent from Litsy it is because of THIS BOOK!!! All I want to do is turn pages!

It focuses on my 2 favorite characters in the series Cheerwell Maker, once a plucky young Beetle girl ready for adventure, now a broken woman grappling with loss, and Thalric, once her captor and bitter enemy, a Wasp who grew a conscience, now something like a friend.

The plot reminds me of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and I love it

This right here is one of the (many many) reasons that I love this series so much.

The preceding volume wrapped up the big 4-book war, so here we get a mention of the services provided to veterans, something you‘re not going to find in every fantasy/steam/bugpunk series. I love a well-thought-out world.

The next paragraph mention PTSD and how Beetle doctors aren‘t equipped for it because it is not a mechanism they can repair.

Vinjii Is that the Shadow of the Apt series? I‘ve read Children of Time, Dogs of War and Guns of the Dawn and loved all three. Should give this a try! 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Vinjii Yep! I‘ve only read this series but it is fantastic. All his stuff is on my To Read list 6y

Starting Shadows of the Apt Book 5!

It is good to be back in the Lowlands, and checking in with old friends... well, everyone that survived Book 4 that is... so... just a couple of old friends really. But I‘ve missed them! And Cheerwell finally made it on the cover! Good for her!

This is the best epic fantasy series with steampunk elements set in a society where the various races and cultures are all insect-based that you haven‘t read!

LibrarianRyan Hummm. My TBR grows. 6y

JazzFeathers This series has been on my TBR since it first came out and still l haven't read it yet. Bought the first book in the series ages ago 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @tessavi @xicanti @JazzFeathers Highly recommended! Exceptional world-building, complex and likable characters both good and bad, and it is an epic fantasy that does so much that is NEW which doesn‘t happen often. 6y

It took me a while to begin this book but begin it i did as it followed a beloved characters search for meaning and the quest to find your own tribe . I love the characters still , the wars , the betrayals & especially the twists. I just love spending time in this crazy fantasy can't recommend it enough such a good story.
