I am a sucker for books with interesting designs, unusual layouts etc. My ten year old self would have loved this story.

This was free in the Audible Plus catalog. I didn't know anything about the book or author when I started it, but it turned out to be a fast paced mystery/thriller. Not the best I read, but just what I was in the mood for!

An interesting setting but that's it. The story itself fell flat and I forgot most of it after finishing it.

Written in 1968, I think Clarke succeeded in creating a story that still holds up today. I should watch the movie someday.

Updating my bullet journal while listening to the tagged book.
I started a bullet journal before but failed to keep track and didn't like how it turned out. Keeping it simple this time and just adding the books I read in the last 3 years.

As with most short story collections, it was a mixed bunch. There were a few I loved and some were quite haunting. However, this is a rare case where the movie is better than the title story.
Would recommend this if you enjoyed The Three-Body Problem.

Graywacke Is it related to the movie? 2mo
tessavi @Graywacke The title story setting is the same, but that's a out it. None of the other stories are related. 2mo
Graywacke @tessavi huh. Interesting. 2mo

I loved the premise and world building of this story, but some parts dragged. Too much politics.

This is the second Backman book I read and I have mixed feelings. Some parts really touched me an Backman is great at showing people's thoughts & emotions. But there is just something about the writing style that makes it less enjoyable. I felt the same a out A man called Ove.

katy4peas I enjoyed Ove, but I think I listened to it on audio. I wonder if this one would be more enjoyable for you on audio? 🤷‍♀️ 2y

I listened to the audio and was engrossed. Not the best dystopian novel ever, but it did make me feel uncomfortable.

Sweettartlaura SO uncomfortable 😮. I was angry reading this pretty much all the way through. Wasn‘t expecting that much of a reaction. 2y

A sci-fi mystery that reminded me of Crouch's Dark Matter, which I read first though it was published later. The first half was filled with science and the most interesting. I'll pick up the second book some day.

I didn't know which books on my shelves to read and my boyfriend picked this one. I loved it! Some of the science part went a bit over my head but the story is solid. Some of the conversation s felt a bit awkward, but I think that might be a cultural/translation thing. Bought the second book 😊

DuckOfDoom I also use my BF to pick a 'random' book if I can't decide. He sometimes even reads the back to see if it can spike his interest and fits my mood. 3y

As with every short story collection, some stories stood out while others were so-so. I took a long break between the 1st & 2nd half and during that time I found that certain scenes often popped back into my mind. Under My Roof is my favorite & if it ever becomes a novel, I'll definitely pick it up. Mamatas has made it onto my radar & I look forward to reading more of his.
