Alexander Price has survived gorgons, basilisks, and his own familyno small feat, considering that his family includes two telepaths, a reanimated corpse, and a colony of talking, pantheistic mice. Still, hes starting to feel like hes got the hang of thingsat least until his girlfriend, Shelby Tanner, shows up asking pointed questions about werewolves and the state of his passport. From there, its just a hop, skip, and a jump to Australia, a continent filled with new challenges, new dangers, and yes, rival cryptozoologists who dont like their visiting expert very much.Australia is a cryptozoologists dream, filled with unique species and unique challenges. Unfortunately, its also filled with Shelbys family, who arent delighted by the length of her stay in America. And then there are the werewolves to consider: infected killing machines who would like nothing more than to claim the continent as their own. The continent which currently includes Alex.Survival is hard enough when youre on familiar ground. Alex Price is very far from home, but theres one thing he knows for sure: hes not going down without a fight.

When Australia is hit with sudden werewolves, Alex & Shelby fly to help the conservationist society in charge of Australia‘s supernatural. It‘s good things won‘t be complicated by Alex dating the leader‘s daughter. Oh wait.

I really love Alex‘s sense of humor & the exploration of a new part of the world with different creatures. Some interesting interpersonal conflict + a bigger mystery that kept me guessing. Excited for the next one! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Lauredhel I though this was the weakest of the Incryptid books, and I still enjoyed the hell out of it! 1y

I love this InCrypyid series by Seanan McGuire. The books are centered around the Price family who study and protect oft misunderstood cryptid (non human) species from humans and vice versa. The humor/sarcasm, the Price family members and all the supporting characters are outstanding. This book takes place in Australia which is experiencing an outbreak of lycanthropy.

“All right. Take me to the oubliette.”
“It‘s not an oubliette,” she said. “There‘s cable.”

Lunch break car reading. I‘m wearing a skirt because we went river tubing this weekend, which is SO fun but also always seems to equal terrible sunburn. You‘d think I‘d learn my lesson and reapply sunscreen more often eventually.... This is such a fun vacation read, I enjoyed it by the pool in Vermont but didn‘t get a picture.

I landed myself in the ER today by inciting panic with an innocent question at a doctor's office about an ulcer. This is why I avoid doctor's visits.

The series-within-a-series-standalone-not-standalone nature of the Incryptid novels can be a LITTLE difficult to explain when recommending this fantastic Steve-Irwin-Meets-Everything-That-Goes-Bump-In-The-Night series (and this novel in particular) but it is worth it if you can get another reader hooked on the rush of Aeslin mice and covert conservational shenanigans.

I'm only four chapters in, but am so far impressed with the handling of Australian elements. So far the only implausible thing have been the names.

Clare-Dragonfly The names, really? How so? 7y
earlgreyediting @Clare-Dragonfly The main Australian character is Shelby Tanner. I can buy Tanner as a white Australian surname, but Shelby doesn't fit. 7y
Clare-Dragonfly How interesting! I never would have thought there would be any difference between white American and white Australian names--Shelby is unusual, but not enough to make me notice it. 7y
