This has been my first Sherlock Holmes experience and I have been surprised, fooled, entertained and caught up in the misty London atmosphere.

One thing that I wasn't expecting was the Western elements in ASiS and TVoF. It was like reading a book within a book and both hampered the flow and added extra storytelling.

Modern whodunnits are much more developed, but don't have the same qualities as these original detective stories. Recommended!

RaeLovesToRead P.S. my favourite of the 4 was The Hound of the Baskervilles! 3y

I love the idea of a volcanic, untamed heart. What a gorgeous turn of phrase!

#riotgrams #day12 - #classicsyoulove

Perhaps my favorite thing about the Holmes novels is how, after knowing them from the broader culture all your life, when you finally read them, they're way different from what you expected. Half of the story usually concerns the criminal's motives, which are often just as engaging as the mystery.

As far as introductions go, I speak from experience in recommending the Holmes short stories before looking into the novels. The twists on formula that the longer format provides contrast nicely with the more cozy arcs of the average short. Either way, these novels (novellas? none are over 200 pages) have stood the test of time and are well worth investigating.

Have finished A Study in Scarlet & The Sign of Four, and am now beginning The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Can't help but feel a bit put out that I'll be reading 4 novels in the act of adding one book to my reading goal.

After reading the short stories last year, I've been meaning to get around to the novels for a while. Was pleasantly surprised to find this Deluxe edition available, and that it qualified for a coupon I got in the mail.

Richryan52 @AMVP This is a really nice looking collection. My favorite novel is The Valley of Fear 6y
AMVP @Richryan52 yeah, Penguin don't mess around. 6y
Richryan52 @AMVP Have you read any pastiches? 6y
AMVP @Richryan52 if you mean non-Doyle Sherlock stories, I actually got into Sherlock via Dust and Shadow by Lyndsay Faye. 6y
Richryan52 @amvp I have read her. Read Art in the Blood and a number of others and I just finished my third 6y
