SW-T What‘s “classic” is generally accepted Western canon, but if you‘re not constrained by that idea, “classic” can be expanded to include so much more. So Romance of Three Kingdoms (China) won‘t make Western lists but will be on Eastern ones. Is it age, endurance, or relatability to a modern audience? We simplify to make things easier but leave a lot off the table that way. 5y

Perhaps my favorite thing about the Holmes novels is how, after knowing them from the broader culture all your life, when you finally read them, they're way different from what you expected. Half of the story usually concerns the criminal's motives, which are often just as engaging as the mystery.
