As a Man Grows Older
As a Man Grows Older | Italo Svevo
Not so long ago Emilio Brentani was a promising young author. Now he is an insurance agent on the fast track to forty. He gains a new lease on life, though, when he falls for the young and gorgeous Angiolinaexcept that his angel just happens to be an unapologetic cheat. But what begins as a comedy of infatuated misunderstanding ends in tragedy, as Emilios jealous persistence in his follyagainst his friends and devoted sisters advice, and even his own best knowledgeleads to the loss of the one person who, too late, he realizes he truly loves. Marked by deep humanity and earthy humor, by psychological insight and an elegant simplicity of style, As a Man Grows Older (Senilit, in Italian; the English title was the suggestion of Svevos great friend and admirer, James Joyce) is a brilliant study of hopeless love and hapless indecision. It is a masterwork of Italian literature, here beautifully rendered into English in Beryl de Zoetes classic translation.-Print ed. The poem of our complex modern madness.EUGENIO MONTALE Svevo has the capacityso rare as to be almost unknown in the English novelof handling emotional relationships with a combined tenderness, humour and realism.THE TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT

2⭐️ What a painful novel to read! Emilio is lovesick, and the lady he‘s in love with is a cheat. He‘s gone from “I love you to death” to “I hate you for hurting me, I don‘t want to see you anymore” to “Oh, I can‘t live without you it doesn‘t matter that you cheat”, and this goes on and on it‘s worse than middle school‘s confused love stories. The last three chapters saved this book from getting 1⭐️ from me. That‘s how bad I dislike it

Current read. I‘m getting similar vibes as Journey by Moonlight (Antal Szerb)

Mehso-so

Emilio Brentani is settled into a comfortable life, with a spinster sister keeping house and long talks with his friend Balli. And then he meets Angiolina. A beautiful, young flirt enchants Emilio, providing the fantasy of himself as a suffering lover and a Don Juan. The writing at times is beautiful but it‘s a difficult book to connect to; too much of a different time. While the characters feel real, I just couldn't quite empathize with Emilio.

Pickpick

This is the meticulous account of the feelings of a man for his libertine girlfriend, his meek sister and his flamboyant friend. Jealousy, naivety, manipulation and boredom alternate. Sometimes enough to make one squirm, sometimes painfully recognizable. Quite an expert on the human psyche, Svevo, as I also noticed in Zeno‘s Conscience. #1001books
