?My mother sent you this,TM he said. ?Oh?TM ?I believe itTMs some marmalade,TM he said. ?From the latest batch.TM ?How kind,TM said Nicola, opening the bag. ?You havenTMt told them, then?TM ?Told them what?TM ?That weTMre no longer in a shared marmalade situation…TM Shortlisted for the Booker Prize, this brilliant novel from Madeleine St John, author of The Women in Black, is a comic and tender look at the vicissitudes of love and relationships. Nicola should never have stepped out to buy that pack of cigarettes, because the man she discovers in her living room when she returns is not the adorable, straightforward, devoted Jonathan with whom she has been sharing her life. That Jonathan would never have unilaterally decided that she should, as he abruptly put it, ?move outTM. A shocked Nicola packs her bags and sets out bravely on the bumpy course that will take her from the end of an affair to the essence of the thing. This edition of The Essence of the Thing comes with an introduction by Helen Trinca, Madeleine St JohnTMs biographer.

Pickpick

The story of the end of a relationship told with dispassionate wit. Very enjoyable.

Me: I'll just pick my next read, then go wash the dishes...

Also me: hm, I'm halfway done this book and now it's bed time, when did that happen?

(Despite what a fast read this is, I don't think it's a keeper for me. Unless the last half does something spectacular to counteract what a misogynistic a**hole the main male character is. But, yay for chipping down the ol' tbr mountain!)

I'm starting to think about 2018 reading goals... one thing I know, I want (need) to get through a lot more of my physical tbr. So, 2018 goal: read all books on this shelf, for no other reason than it's the top shelf. Hopefully will add another shelf to my goal but this is a starting point. And there just so happens to be #13 unread books on it #novemberbythenumbers

readordierachel A worthy goal! 7y
Andrea4 So, if I came in and messed with your shelves, how much would you hate me? 😈😂😂😉 7y
