The Hush
The Hush | John Hart
It's been ten years since the events that changed Johnny Merrimon's life and rocked his hometown to the core. Since then, Johnny has fought to maintain his privacy, but books have been written of his exploits; there's talk of a movie. Living half-wild on the vast acreage he's inherited, Johnny knows every pool and hill and hidden glade. His only connection to normal life is his old friend, Jack. They're not boys anymore, but the bonds remain. What they shared. What they lost. But Jack sees danger in The Hush; he sees darkness, intent, and a terrible will. Johnny will discuss none of it, but there are the things he knows, the things he can do. A lesser friend might accept such abilities as a gift, but Jack has felt what moves in the swamp: the cold of it, the unspeakable fear. Ranging in scope from Africa and the antebellum south to the despair of the Great Depression, The Hush is a study of forgotten truths and a stunning reminder of why John Hart has won critical acclaim and the abiding love of readers around the world. Beautifully crafted and thrilling to the end, this book is an exploration of things unseen and the ties that bind, of friendship and persistence and forgotten power. After five consecutive New York Times bestsellers, it's easy to see why John Hart still warrants comparison to such luminaries as Pat Conroy, Cormac McCarthy, and Scott Turow.

#12AuthorsIn22. Day 5 John Hart
The one book I've read was The Last Child. A 5 star read, I couldn't put it down. Have you read anything by this author?

I absolutely love John Hart and his books always end up on a list that I recommend to others; however, I had a hard time loving this one. There was a lot of mysticism/voodoo type stuff in there that made this weird. The book seemed really long and if it were any other writer, I would probably give this two stars.!

CoverToCoverGirl I really like him too, now I am hesitant to read this one as “magic” is not something I care for as a reader in a storyline. 5y

So I got this new tripod and it has a Bluetooth remote, which is awesome, but I‘m technologically challenged and I thought it wasn‘t working. I ended up with a lot of pictures on my phone that look just like this. 😂

Rissreads 😆 5y
bewareofwords Definitely something I would do. 😂 5y

We went to Barnes and Noble today. They apparently have a secondhand section, which I never knew about. 4 of these books are from there. The others are new but were all deeply discounted and the most expensive one from that batch was $5.98!

Bookwormjillk A second hand section in Barnes and Noble? I‘ll have to look for that. 6y
abookishbutterfly @Bookwormjillk I‘m not sure that they have it at every B&N but we do have a really big one about 30 minutes away and that one has it. I‘m sure the smaller one we usually go to doesn‘t. 6y
Aaronlisa That‘s pretty cool 6y
Kayla.Adriena I really like John Hart and always recommend the last Child to peeps! 6y
abookishbutterfly @Kayla.Adriena I almost bought The Hush the other day at a thrift store but I wanted to get The Last Child first. I was very happy to be able to get both books today! 6y

Even if you‘re willing to over-look how women, and especially mothers, are depicted in this novel (I was not), this odd horror/mystery novel was riddled with plot holes and a truly unlikeable protagonist. I spend much of the book wishing the Giant Evil Force would just consume him already.

Best part of the ending was being interrupted by the kitten. #catsoflitsy

charl08 Kitten's looking so well after his awful early start! 6y
RidgewayGirl @charl08 As soon as she recovered from surgery to have the eye removed, she turned into a regular kitten, meaning that no moving object is safe, especially not toes. 6y

I knew I wanted to read this one as I love Hart's books but I couldn't have known how much I would love this! I didn't realize that it was the second in the Johnny Merrimon series until after I had started it. It continues with his life as a recluse but the swamp that he is living in is steeped in mystery and unexplained deaths. I was surprised at the supernatural aspects of this novel but found it very well done and it really drew me in. 4.5🌟

SqueakyChu I first heard of John Hart when I asked a North Carolina author and bookstore owner (Curt Finch) to recommend a North Carolina author he likes. He recommended John Hart. 7y
jillrhudy A staff pick at our library for May! 7y
Chellebearss @SqueakyChu I‘ve enjoyed all his books. I started with Iron House on my honeymoon 5 years ago 7y

Not as moving as The Last Child and I wasn't crazy about the ending...but I can imagine another book coming out with Cree as the protagonist.

RaimeyGallant Good to know. :) 6y

I could not put this down. Tense thriller with elements of the supernatural. This is a story of friendship, the power of the natural world, and magic that has moved through generations. Not quite sure how to characterize it -- Gothic Southern fiction with a historical horror element? Whatever you want to call it, it was a very compelling read. #mounttbrreadathon

LazyDays This book is a very emotional one. Its the only one I've read of his. Hush is on my TBR I'd it's half as good as The Last Child...in in for some tears 7y

My weird dog Finnegan scared the bajeezers out of me while i read this. Spooky. A very different, effectively deep sequel to The Last Child. 4.5/5 stars for me! full review on my blog http://scrappymags.com/2018/02/25/book-review-the-hush-by-john-hart/
